Find a knife or make one out of two small stones, listen carefully when you run around - there are chickens everywhere, track and kill one - you'll get some meat and some bones.
Cook and eat the meat (Food!).
Use the knife on bones to make a fishing hook, find a rope or make one out of intestines or rags (rags can be made out of clothes using any cutting tool like knife), cut a couple of bushes to get a long stick. Combine the rope and a long stick to make a fishing rod, dig some worms out of the ground with the knife, attach a worm to the fishing hook, then attach the hook to the fishing rod and find any body of water (should be plenty on the coast).
Also look around the coastal area, especially around boats - can often find a fishing rod there and save some time.
Once you're able to catch fish, you'll never go hungry again.
The most difficult step of the above is to not get capped by some idiot while fishing
There are many other ways to get food, especially as you move off the coast.
This is nothing more than a new player problem and will cease to be an issue once you figure it out.
It's also worth noting that both sprinting and being cold consume a lot more food, so try to avoid doing them at spawn when you can.
Also if you manage to kill another player then you can carve their bones into fishing hooks.
So cooking them makes what difference?
....and how is it not funny when kuru makes you laugh yourself to death?
( a ) Look for 2 small stones. They will either be spaced far apart, on the ground, or you can use a pick-axe on a big stone to make small ones. 2 small stones will make a stone blade; a stone blade can clean a killed animal, like a chicken, and gather some Bark too. 1 Bark + 1 short stick == Fire; another short stick + Bark == Hand Drill Kit to light it.
( b ) The chicken will drop 2 bones, which can be held in the hands and crafted into a Bone Knife. This knife will last for 3-5 uses depending on what you use it for, and will certainly stop you wasting time looking for a knife for the two uses mentioned in ( a ).
( c ) Bones from animals can be crafted into Hooks for fishing. Use a Knife on a Bone to make a Hook. Fishing Rods can be hand-made using a long stick, a piece of rope (2 stacks of 6 rags == rope; use the Stone or Bone knife to make rags on spawned clothing) and a Baited Hook. Use the Knife to dig up worms.
( d ) Finding locations which have useful spawns nearby, and relative safety from Zeds or other players, is part of the fun. Fish can be cooked pretty quickly on an outdoor fire; 2-3 short sticks are all the fuel a fireplace or cooking stove will need to cook 6-8 pieces of chicken. Goats drop 6-8 pieces of meat plus some fat, internal organs, about 8 bones, and a goat pelt which can be tanned into leather. I prefer to cook larger amounts of meat (bigger portions than a chicken or goat) with Firewood rather than short sticks, but you'll want Gloves and/or a Tool to get firewood without cutting your hands. And, with respect to the previous 3 tips... don't forget to wash your hands before eating.
*Assuming you're playing on Chernarus Map,* I'd recommend finding the Water Well on the south-eastern side of Cherno / Prigorodki. Its close to 3 houses which don't have nearby Zeds but do have chickens spawning around it, slightly north of where the coastal train track lines have a junction. Heading East is also a viable option if you spawn in the Cap Golova region on the south coast; there's a water well up the hill to the left when you get on the outskirts of Elektro, heading east and another widely spaced collection of houses and industrial buildings which do spawn loot but which don't spawn Zeds. This gives you plenty of time to hunt, clean, and cook the food nearby as well as decide where to head next. Elektro is a way easier town to learn with in my opinion than either Cherno or Prigo, and there are 2 inland hiking trail-heads in the town center there.
( e ) Killing Zeds is risky business and while there are some decent loot drops to be gotten that way, Food will be a hit or miss item on their list. You're better off spending time in the early game learning to efficiently catch and kill things as small as fast as a chicken without burning too much time or energy while doing it. There is a Weapon though which handles *both* Zeds and Chickens really well.... the Long Stick.
( f ) A word of caution about blindly running towards the nearest animals you hear: Zeds have ears too, and loud agricultural animals will draw the Zeds closer. Thus, *sometimes* it is better to quickly and quietly kill the bothersome animal before you get swarmed, while other times you may want to deal with the Zeds first, before getting the chicken last. Similarly, there are other players to consider in the same way, except that they're way more dangerous than the Zeds. In any event, the presence of Animals can be useful in more than one way. If a chicken draws all the crowd of zombies which spawn in a nearby neighborhood / garage storage yard / hospital / police station *away* from where the Loot is, you can evade them and scour the Loot locations more quickly, safe in the knowledge that the Zeds are less likely to hear you.
( g ) Some of the best Industrial / Village Loot there is includes Metal Wire and Garden Lime. The Lime is good for tanning leather, and 2 pieces of leather + a leather sewing kit == Leather Gloves, top tier gear. The Garden Wire combines with a Short Stick to make either a Tripwire *OR* A Rabbit Snare. Rabbits are *Better* as a food source than chickens, dropping the same number of bones plus pieces of meat (2 each) but the portions of meat are larger (same size as chicken steak in Inventory, but more Food value), plus the Rabbit Pelt can also be made into leather. To be utterly honest, I'd vastly prefer to snare rabbits than "hunt" chickens. The downside with Rabbits is that they don't encourage inland progression if you're planning to farm up a bunch of rabbits with a lot of snares in a known good location. In short, you always have to go back to check the snares. However, if you *don't* plan to make a rabbit snare farm and simply set a snare nearby to your current location before logging off, there is a pretty decent chance there'll be a rabbit in the snare waiting for you when you log back on. Many online Loot map applications include marked regions where rabbits will spawn, and its not hard to figure out where they'll be from experience, either.
I hope you enjoy your next few hours way more. o7
