Can't equip backpack

I just got DayZ and I'm really liking the game. After I respawned i searched the nearby houses and found a yellow waterproof bag. However it will not let me put this back on my back for waterever reason it just moves it to the vicinity and my hands.

Afaik it's not a backpack. It's a 6 slot bag you put in your backpack to prevent the items from getting wet.

So if i dont have a backpack i can't use it. thanks. But i've been having this problem with other stuff also for example i found a crowbar but it won't let me put it into my inventory it just does the same thing as the bag. I'm probably just being a real dumbass but still

A crowbar requires a lot of space in your inventory. If you don't have the space(backpack) it won't fit and you'll have to keep it in hands. Some items you can shoulder though, like rifles, axes, pick axes and shovels etc.

You can take the waterproof bag in your hand (drag it to the box under your character), and carry more items like that... But it's better to have a real backpack.

I've used it, when I need. Can't fight too good though, with it
