Better to run inland as soon as you can and go to cities there.
Additionally, now when you find mags, it is rare they have more than 50% ammo. This means 'gearing up' takes a second hit with this update.
No more running to one of the new military building and getting almost fully geared as in 0.59.
^ Bad for players who enjoy PvP.
I like the setting in the new patch as you must really search for loot to find it, you'll appriciate it more and you'll think twise before taking that shot as you may be the victim and loosing your ♥♥♥♥ ain't fun after spending hours looting up.

To be clear, this is the fifth stable update since the announcement of Dean's departure.
Dean himself stated he wanted the game to be brutally difficult - infact when asked how the spawn rate in DayZ should be on a scale of 1 to 10 where:
1 = "Should I take the Red Beans or the White Beans? And for dessert, cookies or cupcakes? - Should I take the M4 or the AK? With Acog or Holo sight?"
10 = "Thank god, an unopened can. I've eaten nothing but berries and roots for days. - Finally a revolver bullet, my hatchet's getting dull."
Dean's response was an emphatic "10"

Better get used to it boys. ;)
going in land is always my first move i never check the nearst town after spawning in (the spawn before got there first)
well done dayz
I can be in 1 server and do 1 normal loot run from pavlovo military to zelenogorsk to mishkino to VMC up to nwaf and get decently geared just from that.
It's been fine to me.
+ i finally reached NWA, there is food, drink, extreme lots of clothing, weapons and ammo with mags
There is loot only on heli crashes and millitary camps!! Played 10 hours of 0.60.
Over all its fun meeting people with a gun who have no ammo makes for a better experience i think!
