MMO? Seriously?
First thing I see on the Store when looking at DayZ is "Massively Multiplayer".

Come on, that's really misleading. There's nothing MMO about this game. It shouldn't be shown as an MMO.

Call me a noob, I've only played for 256 hours, so maybe I'm missing something, but what exactly is MMO about DayZ?

40 person deathmatch with permadeath sure isn't.

I know.

I guess it depends on your defenition of "Massive" since "Multiplayer Online" are both acurate descriptions.

The definition according to wikipedia is:

"A massively multiplayer online game is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet. MMOs usually have at least one persistent world"

It may not have the numbers now. But the goal is to have 100 to 150 people per server. It already has a persistant world that continues to exist and change even without your presence. So sounds like its going to be an MMO to me.

Oh god 100-150 players will be a major PVP bloodbath with a map that little.

I like to call my member MASSIVE even though some say it's tiny. So possibly it;'s just ones ability to quantify dimensions ?
Dinohtar Aug 23, 2014 @ 6:17pm
The map realy isnt that little. Specialy compared to Battlefield who has 64 people on much much smaller maps.

Once they implement all the features there will also be a lot more to do then kill each other.

In Au it would cost $275/mo 150 slot server.
There are dozens of empty server at 40 slots already.Don't see it happening

It is Massive... it is multiplaye, and it is online... How is it NOT an MMO?

But Battlefield is supposed to be a quick paced game with death around every corner, DayZ is supposed to be centered around survival.

Only hope for teamwork in this game is forcing it, which can be achieved through private hives, but we've been told we'll have that later. But with "free will" public hives, I don't see a way the devs will stop this non-stop bloodbath. Most clans are PVP centered, quite a lot dupe. And I doubt it'll be fixed since I keep hearing about more and more new ways.

I know people who only play this game to PVP because they like the risk.

Why would anyone want to give, risk or trust, if their real life isn't on it? The original concept of DayZ is good, but it doesn't work.

EDIT: I actually got laughed at for getting super-geared the legit way.

How is it massive? Compare this kind of massive with other MMOs.

It lags like hell with 40 players already.

Come on, even Rust, which I've played for a little time (around 20 hours), has servers of 500 people maximum, has persistence, and it's still not shown as an MMO.

Massive to me is sitting in Jita with 1000 other players. This is a multiplayer online game with dedicated servers. I am not knocking the game, but whatever the definition is, DayZ is not an MMO. Generally speaking, MMO's do not allow people to manage their own servers.

I think you have a valid point here, the number of players even in any cheap MMORPG it's more than 500 I guess (you know, they don't show player count then it's only an estimate, maybe they have a larger number)
So, I don't know if we can consider this game "massive" even with 150 player servers
