DayZ
Why is this game so popular?
I have this game and it is pretty fun especially with friends but frankly it isn't the best game out there. After a few hours it just gets repetitive, which is largely due to having to run everywhere. And then the zombies are broken, so it is basically a PVP game now. I have played for over 20 hours but I am basically exhausted of the game now, and probably won't play for a long time until they update it with a lot of new content.

Anyway, I don't understand how this game is still at the top of the Steam top sellers and why people like it so much. It's not a bad game in any way, but it isn't especially good either and there are dozens of other games on Steam that are a lot more fun than this.

Early access alpha. not game. And i'm not sure why its so dang popular. It is kind of odd how much people like it now that you think about it. Then again half of the posters on here swear they hate it.
This isn't a game, its an Alpha build. So you shouldn't judge it the same as you would finished games.

A lot of people, newcomers and veterans of the mod, enjoy DayZ and play it a lot.
That should say something to it's quality I think.
It has a tension that no other game out there can deliver. At least that does it for me.
It depends on yourself whether you enjoy the freedom or not.
Some prefer to play alone, a lot more people prefer to play in groups.
It is DayZ, it is in alpha. Once you got the huge adrenalin flow in a fight you want to get more. Not those "1 mag fights". We've had a fight that lasted 30 min. 30 min pure adrenalin makes you want more.

I second this. I haven't played every game out there, but I've never experienced a game quite like this.

I know many games out there that deliver constant tension. One such example is competitive mode on Counter Strike. It is just as tense minus the repetitive 5 hours of gathering stuff and the absolutely laggy and glitchy combat.

I do admit one thing though, DayZ is pretty unique for its social aspect, but that still doesn't make it a great game and if you really wanted to socialize you wouldn't sit in front of a computer all day.

From my 20 hours, I have probably had 4 characters (minus the ones that I just let die because of a bad spawn position), and 2 times I died because someone shot me, 1 time because I fell and broke my leg so my friend killed me so I could respawn, and 1 time because of some retarded glitch (I fell like 5 inches and somehow I died from that). I have killed up to 4 guys in real fights (excluding noobs I just killed randomly), with 2 confirmed kills that I looted. It was fun and tense but it got repetitive and, like I said, the glitchy and laggy combat is a huge turnoff.

April or something. Like I said, there are a lot of other games that are more fun so I have moved on to those and haven't had much time to play this game in a while.

A lot has changed since April.

I would give it a week to let the dust settle from this patch . it was a big one. And then try the game again and see for yourself.

i cant say why exactly i like it so much, maybe cause its in depth, that is to say you have to really survive, there isnt-at least not anymore- a real easy way to score fire arms and when you do, usually you dont have a million rounds for them. Zeds with F you up big time, idk why its so popular but i love playing it even after having my 3 fday old character fall off a ladder and die or break a leg
I have plenty of other games to play BUT I still choose to play DayZ day in and day out. Other games just seem like old run throughs over and over again. DayZ is really fun. There's some kind of panic /adrenaline rush i get when after a gun fight with another player which i like.
What theresjesus said, a lot has changed in the past few weeks (I just bought it earlier this month) and I went from "It's not worth playing" to "Okay here go!"
Personally, this is the only shooter that really makes me care about my life, while at the same time threatening it at every turn. That is where the tension arises from and that is what no other game has been able to replicate, yet.

Stuff like Counter-Strike is tense like sports can be tense, but it doesn't really compare to what DayZ brings to the table.
I come back every other month or so. Until they fix things that have been broken since day one ie. constant random sound effects like zombies and soda cans opening, zombies that dont do anything, hotkeys that actually work when you press them, more than 5 zombies per TOWN, and just about everything else that was promised and not delivered on, I wont even try to play regularly. The tension doesnt come from the environment or zeds but from the fact that a player can be ANYWHERE in the country causing you to lose everything you spent days gathering in a moment. If they fix the engine (I imagine they're making a new one with their team, I dont think the arma engine will ever cut it for this) and get features in that mods like origins have had for years then it will be a game more than an alpha demo.
