Seems like they aggro onto zombies nearby, kill them and then zone in on you even though you haven't moved.
Honestly it's kind of cool how intimidating they are, but it doesn't make any sense that they'll try to attack you through walls because they "smell you".
As a server owner I have esp tools and free look mode, so I can leave body and head over the wolves when they spawn.
They spawn in response to the player being within a set range, all spawns in DayZ work this way, zombies, loot, vehicles, special events, all at different ranges. It's kinda important to understand that stuff isn't just spawned in around the map all the time (with the exception of trader NPCs).
So when the wolf spawns it will typically be 200m to 600m away, and it will lock on at 600m, unless you're in a building when it spawns it very slowly walks toward the player (stalking) and then at around 250m it locks on and starts to sprint. It despawns if you maintain enough distance or leave it's territory area.
You'll also hear them at anything up to about 400m.
There is a file (dayzOffline.chernarusplus\env\wolf_territories.xml) where all wolf spawn points are listed, as well as their "activation range". This varies from 45 m. (near the pools of water) at 300 m. (in hunting areas). The exact activation points can be found also on the "Izurvive" map (it is quite accurate). The fact that you hear the howls as if they are very distant is a configuration of the game, in fact you are already in the area and have already activated the wolves, which will arrive "physically" after a while. If you have a lot of stamina you could also run away towards the opposite direction of the howls, often it works... but if after a while you come back you find them waiting for you (I don't know for how long, however, it seems not to follow the info of the game configuration files: another bug, maybe).
And finally... I guess a bug, I don't think it's done on purpose: they DON'T always howl. It happened to me (and I read not only to myself) to find wolves around me but WITHOUT any warning howl. And sometimes even 1 single, although in the configuration files it should be 4 to 6.
DayZ is always DayZ, with all its "flaws".
P.S.
You can jump on a hay bale if you can't find any buildings nearby. However, it should also be possible to kill them with melee weapons, but you must always have your back protected, or they also attack you from behind. In any case, it always attacks only one at a time, but you never know who and from where.
Wrong info there. Loot, vehicles, special events, animals all spawn regardless of where players are, across the entire map that's how the Loot Economy system works. What you are seeing is the range of your esp, which also differs on its range depending on the categories. Most items only appear on the esp up to around 350-500 meters from your character's location (not the camera's location). Animals usually further than items. So all items are on the map, even if you aren't seeing them or they aren't rendering for you.
Animals are also everywhere on the map. They only appear on your esp (up to 1100 hundred meters I see sometimes) but generally show much further than items. But wolves, deer etc. are already spawned. This is much easier to see on the mountains on Namalsk where they aren't behind cover where you can spot them at their max render range, same as zombies about 1100 meters, just standing around not aggroed on anything.
The main exception are the zombie spawns which are mostly dynamic, but have some static spawns. Some are always on the map in areas, and some only spawn as a result to player proximity. Different maps have different use of static and dynamic zombie settings.
Try vpp admin tools and use the XML Editor stats and you'll see everything properly.
because i died fully geared (20h+playthrough) on official from zombie bug, they surrounded me and glitched me into a texture of tent, where they could attack me, but i couldnt get up or move (zombies were also stuck with me so they didnt run away when i passed out) so i died, but since i was so triggered i respawned and just started running all the way to the airfield ASAP, only picking up fruits from the ground to survive.
And guess what ? i encounter a wolf pack that attacks me while im a freshy.
