Another big tip is don't sprint everywhere, your energy lasts a lot longer if you just jog or walk. Plus you aren't as easily noticed or heard by other people. The gear you have on your character layers to make noise, so like a rifle on your shoulder, a backpack, loud boots instead of sneakers, etc. will all make you noisier. I think a pretty meta thing to do is cut clothes up and use improved footwraps (hold them in your hand and you can cycle through the different stuff you can make) which protects your feet and makes as little noise as possible. Otherwise, just learn stuff through trial and error. I could sit here all day making little tips like that but youtube can teach you a lot, it's how I learned to play.
I mean, you can but they ruin the fun imho and there's loads of ways to find out where you are and where to go already in game.
but don't listen to me, play the waycyou like :)
lastly. always go inland. better loot but more danger.
If it is raining consider takig shelter and just waiting out the rain. In your fresh spawn gear the rain will make you lose energy multiples quicker as will the cold you will get.
If you can find a track and move along it 150m or so wait a short while and backtrack. Smal stones will spawn as will mushrooms by haybales and in the tress and if you are in an orchard so will apples. These things spawn by player proximity so if you wait you will find them instead of just looking and running off. backtrack and you will find them. These foraged foods are 3 to 4 times more nutritious if you cook them. So if you find a stone go to a large boulder and hit it and get more small stones... Combine two small stones and now you have a knife and you can cut up clothing for rags. You can also kill and skin any chickens you hear with your knife and importantly use the rags to make improvised gloves becuase eating with bloody hands will make your fresh spawn experience a whole level of hurt harder to the point the KOS losers just respawn as a freshie to avoid the challlenge of survival.
If you find a well drink 25 sips or so untill you see the full stomach icon appear. If yo uhave a bottle empty it first then fill it as if you drink a half full random bottle you risk cholera. And that's 2 hours of hurt without meds.
also google day sa "map name" so it can help you find your way on the map.
Zeds carry food sometimes, it's easy to lure one out of the horde and knock him out. Aim for the head with your swings, they will go down much easier.
Don't tunnel vision on rocks/knives/can openers and stuff, pretty much any tool, from a wrench to a shovel will open a can food, you will spill some but remember that you want to leave the coast and loot greener pastures.
If you just want to play bandit and KOS then that's one way to go.
...but if you're going to use mods you may aswell go find a high pop PvP community server that provides all the QOL mods (in-game map for instance) to enable such play. Stick around, make friends, have a good time.
It's not the only way to play though. So work out what you want from the vanilla game and then look for a server that provides it.
That is by far the best way to start. Getting by the first 20 minutes with a full apple and bottle means you can spend the next few hours exploring and looting never do you have to risk an area you see dead infected you didn't kill because you must get some food.
