Tracking/following players
Been zapped a couple of times now in the middle of a wood when I stopped to fart around with my gear or light a fire.

How many of you stalk a reasonably well equipped player for a longish period waiting for the opportunity to kill?

Best countermeasures?

The only countermeasure is to always look behind your back regularly.

Once during the 0.63 stress tests I set up camp in the middle of nowhere, far from the coast, to cook a goat I had killed. Before I even lit the fire, out of nowhere comes a psycho in a wolf mask with a kitchen knife and attacks me. After I killed him and I checked his body he had NOTHING on him. Just pants, hoodie, mask and knife. Not even shoes. Always wondered how the fudge he got there without starving to death, and how he found me. Kinda creepy, especially considering it was a low pop server.

Creepy as hell, would be enough for me to quit playing for a week!

On my occasions, I was deep in a wood, had a cursory look around then ‘you are dead’.

Woods must be haunted !

Making a fire in the open or at night can be very dangerous as light and smoke can be seen from afar.
The server I play in doesn't typically have more than 12 people at a time(which is a damper being I'm on Livonia) but I heard someone shooting while me and my friend were on a long trip from our base to Swarog(a military camp). We kept traveling and found out that the shots came from a guy who was attacked by wolves by the cut up pelts and wolf meat lying on the ground, but nevertheless we continued our route. It began to rain and we had to seek shelter so we wouldn't freeze to death doing so in a town on our way to the base. This was maybe 30 minutes into our adventure. My friend had noticed a light so when the rain cleared up we scoured the town making sure we weren't being followed. We made our way to the side of town with military tents and noticed it had been sacked and someone left behind a Vaiga shotgun with 2 drum mags which I had picked up. While on this part of town I heard normal footsteps leaving town but didn't make anything of it at the time. So when we left that town and made it to Swarog we noticed AGAIN the entire base had been looted except one building gave away that we had been following someone for about 2 hours now. In a barracks we found wolf meat and me and my friend knew he had to be around. Going further into the base as me and my friend split up I ran into a guy with NVG and neither me or my friend had a pair so I knew this was the guy we had been following and killed him with his own shotgun he left in the previous town.

Another time we where posted up at the prison hoping to find some decent gear there however we didnt find exactly what we wanted but we hung around for a bit thinking a player would show up. We spotted a fella from a tower and though he didn't notice me or my friends I waited patiently for him to sit still for a brief moment. Than took my shot to kill him.

So if I spot someone I wont shoot right away as I may lose my advantage of surprise.

I haven't been followed much and the reason may be because I am with one or two other people and we are constantly watching around us. My suggestion is to not head straight into a town and possibly move to a vantage point to see if there is any movement around.

Someone looting will go building to building looking for things but someone looking to get high tier gear will be looking for geared people looting carelessly. That's how i got my second pair of NVG today.

Sorry for the read but hope the stories help.

Thanks, I enjoyed reading the story and it summarizes what I experienced - Good advice too.

I like to track people, careful though more often than not you become the hunted :steamfacepalm:

Never stay still when you're fully visible, run as fast as you can when shot at, find cover and wait to see if they chase you, then you can engage with the surprise advantage, if you try to find the shooter when they know where you're at, you're at an enormous disadvantage and probably get killed. ANd never stay in the same place for too long.

But even then you'll still get killed lol. Like BAMMARGERA said, every now and then someone will spot you and headshot you in the woods...

Last week me and 2 friends were in a server and it got almost empty, so we decided to look for heli crashes. We went to those tents west of Bogatyrka, looted them and spot the crash just north of them. Me and another friend ran towards it, one remained in the tents sorting his loot. 5 mins later and bam he was killed lol. There were 7 players on that server and 1 guy was close to us. Of course we made our way back, were able to secure his body, but couldnt find the killer... Strange thing is he was probably stalking us and never engaged the rest of the group or my friend on his way back to recover his stuff.

Apparently I got some karmic payback for my earlier wisecrack Derleth. I logged into our private server and knew I was completely alone. As I'm getting oriented there was the tinkle of broken glass within a few virtual feet of my character. I can't say I've ever heard that sound effect before. A real live goosebump producer lol

Haha awesome. And I can't say I've heard that sound either - now I am intrigued!

There have been some great comments and stories here, I’m now treating the whole thing as Escape and Evasion - a hostile environment with only a modest chance that a local is friendly

What usually happens when they're not sure if they hit you is that they tend to run themselves like the cowards that they are who can only shoot you in the back. :steamsad:
Happened to me a couple times. I saw a guy on the field to my right while i was also crossing the open. I didn't face him but only turned my head to see what he will do. Of course he aimed but missed all his shots. Then i lost contact afterwards. Funny thing though i met another player in the same town not even 10 minutes earlier at least he didn't shoot me he even told me directions. He was a bit defensive but i respected that and kept my distance.

I've never personally stalked anyone for a long period of time. I generally avoid people when I can, I'm one of those crazy hermit types.

I HAVE been ambushed when i stopped to set up a camp. Not sure if he was following me or just unlucky on me.
