Also note "survive" the night is a laughable excuse for the black screen. Theres nothing to "survive" in the game.
Play daytime when you have no tools for the night.
Nearly each patch tweaks Night time.
Further, cant switch servers.
Also, keep in mind that in the DayZ world there is no light pollution. Light pollution from urbanized areas spreads in the atmosphere, making the nights unnaturally bright even in more remote, less developed areas.
Regardless, when there is moon and/or stars, the current DayZ night is too dark, and there seems to be no in-game simulation of the fact our eyes adapt to the dark after some time giving us a wee bit better nightvision. Not good enough to see in nearly lightless conditions, but on a starlit night we should see well enough to move about at least.
As for there being nothing to survive, go aggro a bunch of zeds in the dark and see how it goes. They're not so easy to handle when you can't see well enough to shoot them...
This isnt a criticism of the game so stop getting so offended and go back to playing your no vis game. Join me on this high pop and Ill show you why you shouldnt use a light at night.
Forgot to mention, Zeds at night? Really? Theres literally 3 at my feet as we speak. Use the sound my friend.
In a dense forest, with a thick cloud cover overhead and no nearby streetlights for the clouds to reflect back - you will get absolutely lightless conditions. Hence I couldn't see my damn feet when walking on that road. That is what is simulated in DayZ, with a cloud cover there are no other light sources available, so it is pitch black.
However, with stars and moon visible we should see better. In-game the stars and moon feel too weak, they should provide better visibility.
