Tents are obvious and easily found even if you think you've pitched it where you think the map is less travelled.
Barrels are ok if you put them as close as you can to a large tree so that they are hidden by the branches, darker coloured barrels are better as again some are easily found, eg. yellow barrels.
Crates require a bit of work to make them as you need to gather those resources but they can be burried.
Drybag backpacks are arguably the best for a small stash as they can be buried making them all but impossible to find if you choose a good spot and will keep your stash for you for 8 calendar days although you will always need to find a shovel or a garden hoe to dig up your stash again.
Think carefully what you want your stash to be for. I often find tents filled with the same loot. mostly the loot you'd easily find in that area anyway, The only benefit from looting them is you get 4 or 5 stacks of bullets that normally you'd have to hunt for longer to loot.
About the best thing to stash these days is the full NBC suit in my opinion as it takes up a lot of inventory to carry around and can take a good number of hours to get a full military suit so once you have it and have successfully looted a static zone for a good weapon it is best to stash it for your next life. It fits in 1 drybag and therefore makes it a great asset to have stored.
If it is to get a good beginning on re-spawn then you will want to make it centrally close to the fresh spawn area so you can reach it easily it but remember you will need to reset it's timer once a week at least if you survive for long periods.
If you make your stash in an obscure far from spawn area if becomes really just a loot goblin lag point that you will struggle to get back to it from freshspawn, and the more you have in it the more a passerby will get aware of it as they suddenly experience a lag spike in that area.
Also with a stash a long way from spawns you will find that once you have got back to it you are already geared up anyway so it's practicality diminishes.
tents are cumbersome and needed to be carried around with walking speed so very unreliable if you dont have walls surrounding it. they are very visible even from far away so dont store anything if you dont have walls covering it.
wooden crates can be crafted anywhere. all you need is a hatchet and nails.
if you find a hoe, pickaxe, or a shovel, then all you need is a drypack, first aid pack, protective case or a teddy bear. you can bury these.
i wouldnt count of barrel as they are hard to find, not to mention you need to carry them on hand at walking speed to a safe location.
if you find a field backpack move it to a safe location and store items there. when you log out wield it on your hand. when you log back in, it will stay there with you. back packs despawn after 8 hours or so so be careful.
either use the burying technic, wooden crate, or field backpack technic. field backpack technic is the safest since you bring it with you when you log out making it impossible to get stolen.
I spend a lot of time in the south of Livonia....hunting for bases and just surviving. It's a good area down there living off the land and the wolves and bears. It also is amazing how many players you can see pass by if you set up a good observation post although most are poorly geared since they have rushed to the South in hope of a good loot.
All buried containers will last for 14 days (without interaction). On community servers the owners can change it to their liking.
