The controller does work but you will still need to use a mouse when you are in your inventory
Not sure if this counts for steam controller. It's been a long time since i last used mine but afaik you should be able to fully costumise a steam controller and make it work on pretty much any game you like, with or without controller support.
Plus if you’re playing dayz pc you might as well use the mouse and keyboard as navigating inventory is way faster with a mouse
He can't use KB/M because of arthritis..
Anyway, i would gladly do the test with my steam controller and figure it out, but my usb wire broke a while ago and still need to replace it and i have no wireless adapter either...
I'm pretty sure it will work fine though and inventory management also will be no problem.. If there's anyone with a steam controller willing to do the test or can confirm that it actually will work i'm sure it would be appreciated by OP.

If you're talking about configuring a steam controller.. mind you there's always the option of downloading other peoples templates or configs and go from there. The video i posted the guy even refers to his own profile, which you can find for download. Don't know if it's still available and up to date tho.
"Search Community Configs for: DayZ Standalone Complete [Dual Trackpad 2019]
or paste this link in browser: steam://controllerconfig/221100/1742973793"
It may appear a bit overwhelming at first, since the possibilities are pretty much endless, but once you get the hang of it i'm sure you'll manage and figure what suits you best.
