Start with mastering the basics. Feeding, watering and meds. Keeping yourself, warm and dry, The reason I do not recommend you learn the game on a modded server is because many have to much loot. more guns food ammo etc. That may sound great to you, but being spoon fed is not going to help you learn the game.
The coast (where you spawn) is often picked through, Try to use get to one of the cities for a few supplies, water, food meds. (you will find other items of importance while your taking care of the basics. Like knife, axe, clothing , can opener, lighter etc.
You can find out where u are by using landmarks or at the entrance/exit of the towns where u will find signs with the towns name on it. Use izurvive map to pinpoint ur location. https://www.izurvive.com/chernarusplussatmap/ Once u find where u are, using the map will tell you where water is, where a hospital is and other helpful info.
If you keep getting player killed, Go on a low pop server so u have a little more wiggle room. Having a buddy that knows the game can be huge. But it is not necessary. I watched a ton of videos when I was learning the game. There is a tutorial on everything dayz.
Always remember rule number 1. DO not get attached to your gear. This seems to be a hurdle some players just can not get past and the game is "unplayable" for them. But IMO that's just pure laziness.
Also, for new players cities = death, roam around farms and small settlements at first.
Also, it is hard to find the right modded server as a new player, as sooo many spoon feed you. More loot etc. I just never find that a good way to learn the game. But if the toxicity of officials is just going to chase those new players away anyways, IDK..
