Food
Whats the deal with food in this game? I cant find any, and I'm starving to death with 30minutes of spawning in. Just makes the experience unplayable.

Three main ways to get food...

Foraging - Look for loose apples and pears under the right type of trees. These have good hydration but low nutrition.

Looting - Looting through buildings will yield some food, you can also kill zombies who have a chance for some food on them. Most of the canned food has good nutrition, and will not go rotten.

Hunting - To hunt you need a kinfe, kill a chicken with it. Now gut the chicken and take the meat. Next you have to cook it so, using your knife, cut a bush for sticks then cut bark off a thick tree. Combine your sticks and bark to a fireplace. Combine sticks and bark again to craft a fire starter kit. Last cut a large bush with the knife, get a long stick and sharpen it. All thats left is to light the fire, put the meat on the stick, and cook it.

IMPORTANT NOTE - If you gut a animal without gloves on, you will need to wash your hands. If you dont you will get sick eating with those dirty hands.

I find it best to mix up all 3, so il loot/forage my way through a town, hitting the fruit trees and buildings for food. Once i have the knife il slow down on the first two (but not stop using them) and start to use hunting more. Once i have a gun i can move 100% to hunting, not really viable at the start because all you can kill are chickens.

The knife really is such an important tool, as well as a bottle. Get those two and you shouldnt really ever starve or die to thirst again. They are by far my 2 most essential items as a fresh spawn.

Hope some of that helps :)

Have you tried to fins apples under the trees in house yards?
Greenhouses spawn food. Every town has a chicken you can catch.
I have killed cows with an axe for food.
Cans and packets are only 1 minor way to feed yourself.

500 hours you should already know some basics by then where f.e. to find food.

With the new food items added in recent updates it is even more easy
to find food. I remember when i started playing... there was a lot less
"packaged food" Plus i really sucked at hunting.. I starved a lot playing solo.

Seriously at this point when people complain about starving it's simply just a skill issue.
Yeah sometimes you can get unlucky with spawns but once you have got a knife you are pretty much fine. I think most people either don't have the patience to cook or just don't know how to cook. I have no other explanation why people still starve in this game after so many years

This ^

Hunting, and being able to do so successfully, whether it be chickens, sheep, cow, wolves, deer, is going to be the main way you survive once youre geared.

What also makes a difference is the server you are playing on. If youre playing a modded server with modded loot pools, youre likely going to find more food than say something on a vanilla server

A little extra thing i forgot to mention is fishing. This can be quite easy to get geared for as you can make a hook from the chicken bones and i believe hook+ long stick+rope makes a fishing rod, you see the proper rods quite often on the coast in shipping containers as well.

Personally i avoid fishing, just because i dont like the idea of sitting out in the open at a water source surrounded by treeline. Feels too exposed, leaving the treeline to gut an animal is a tense enough for a hermit player like me haha

i picked up all the fruit, i would smoke the rotten stuff and it seemed edible. i had a whole room full of baked, burnt, dried and rotten fruit and basically spent a week in the same town

Fishing is a great way to get an early big meal. You can also make a rope from two stacks of 6 rags. Don't forget to dig up worms for your bait.
