DayZ
Contaminated zones?
Im curious about this... what are they supposed to be?

I mean it cant be the infection... we are supposed to be immune right?

So is it hard radiation? If so from where? There is no nuclear power plant that iv seen in chernarus.

I guess im just a bit lost on how these fit into vanilla Dayz in a way that gels with what lore we have.

I get the gameplay functions they facilitate, i think both are kinda why they existed as mods for a long time. But how do you feel about them in vanilla, do you think they fit? and what do you think the "contamination" is supposed to be?

They seem to be airburst gas shells of a type like mustard gas.

Could be some type of anticoagulant since the toon is bleeding profusely.
Which disease in Africa cause symptoms like this again?

Thats believable, army dropping gas on infected.

I always thought we were years after the collapse of society though so its a bit odd it would last so long.... although i have no idea the lifespan of mustard gas im guessing it disperses over time.

I guess if there is a gas that could potentially last years my brain could accept that as the explination :)

It disperses on the wind. It seems we are in the infected zone and military beyond the borders are bombarding the areas of infected. Towns, over-run MB etc. The closer to the edge of the map you are the initial artillery fire appears to be louder.
Wait what? you hear actual artillery fire from off map?

Yeah. I was walking the west edge of the map and heard artillery as if was just at the border. Then i heard the shells explode a few km somewhere NE of me.
Meh, ok dont like this premise now.

Theres no way Chernarus is an infected "zone" if the military exist to the level they routinely launch artillery salvos.

This whole zone idea is wacky, I dont think they have thought it through at all if they are using it that way.

What i understood about Dayz lore...

Its years after a global catastrophe and only a few people have survived. We the survivors are immune to the infection.

Now we are just in a zone? And the army still exists? Sending arty salvos into the zone every now and then?

Dont like that, dont like it at all :(

First over the target zone there is a red flare in the sky. Easy to miss but today's update says it will be brighter and longer in the sky.

About a minute later you hear artillery fire.

Another 20 or so seconds later if you are near or in the target zone you hear the shells screetch as they are incoming.

Then there is an airburst and the yellow settles down onto the target zone.

Considering that the helicopters are US and Russian models and they crash over the map it always has implied the military are still fighting and that it is a combined effort in the Cherno/Livonia provinces considering some of the mlitary clothing and weapons are British in origin too.
I suppose the cras sites could imply fighting, i thought they were just more people scavenging helis/military reminents using the old equipment. I guess it really depends on how you pictured the world beyond the map edge.

I defo dont like it, changes the whole idea of what i thought the game was. Not the mechanic itself, just this implimentation dosent make any sense to me.

A form of sickness from the dead body piles would have been more fitting imo, the festering pile of corpses making you sick.. or maybe old ordinance accidently detonating at mil bases... something like that. Anything that fits with the global collapse of society.

Infected zone the military bombard... nah. I feel like if the military still existed they could clear chernarus in a matter of days. We would hear radio transmissions, see planes flying over etc etc... more signs of life outside the "zone" :(

PS Maybe they will add stuff like that to build on this. But yeah for me it just ruins what i thought the premise was.

I seem to remember playing the original Arma II Dayz on the Chenaurus map some servers had artillery bombardments or maybe it was an incoming airstrike on the airfield, but prior to the attack the air raid siren would sound off giving you a pretty fair warning to get the heck outta dodge, to bad they don't incorporate that in conjunction with the arty flare system.

That would have been one of the "mod of a mod" versions, maybe Epoch or Overwatch?

Yeah, Epoch is the one that comes to mind.
