Just sneak up behind them and stealth kill them with a sharp weapon.
They also hear doors opening/closing. In mil areas the call of officer Zs will bring all others Zs into the fight. make sure to kill them first.
HUH I did not know the officer ones call in back up.
@OP. The game is better for these changes IMO. Zombies are tougher now, but they are sttil easy to kill,. Sneak attack works great. One of our servers has 4x tougher zzs and I can still sneak attack and 1 shot those fools.
Do it with bloody hands in the rain. In that situation you can just jog up behind them and take them down on after another. No need to sneak. That said, I don't know if bloody hands is a thing on vanilla?
That is some sort of bug... I do not get it with one handed slash weapons, always with 2H, I been using a machete last 2 days and has been very effective.
But you are right, That fail is scary as it takes a few seconds to recover, which means the zombie most likely will get a hit off on yeah. I have tried to "recover" from this but never succeeded. I am hoping 1.14 fixes this.
Skinny farmer and grandma are lower health so easier to kill. Runners usually have a back pack and can make you think it's a player outside until you get used to them.
If you back up whilst blocking and wait for their 2 handed down swipe you can retaliate with a power hit or two.
using two handed only as a last resort in direct combat when you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.
and I don't think that sidestepping is a bug, it's just to make stealth kills a bit harder - they require a good timing to succeed.
