When wolves were first introduced a while back (before the 1.0 release) they were much harder to fight and they were DEADLY. If you heard the howling you knew you were screwed... I assumed they were still strong and I had 4 bullets for my gun so I figured fighting them was out of the question.... Also, when wolves first got into dayz if you got trapped in a house and logged out youd be a fresh spawn when you logged back in so I was in a tough spot... I couldnt log out and I couldnt fight (because I thought it was the same as before)
I decided to just let one in at a time and kill it.. So I opened the door and realized that there was a wolf on top of the shed in the yard, and two wolves on top of the house i was in. Then I realized the wolves are mentally challenged, it was laughable. Their path finding was bad, their attack pattern was bad and I never got hit despite them lunging at me a couple times.
So three wolves got themselves stuck on roofs just because of poor AI, then I opened the door to let one in and it took a while, I just sat by the door and they would stare at me and run off, then come back... FINALLY one waltzes right in, walks past me and into a different room where I easily lock him it. I decided I wanted to see how hard itd be to kill the one I had isolated inside so I took my pickaxe and killed it with one hit. One single hit. When I got into the room with the wolf it didnt make any effort to attack me either. It turned to look at me and accepted its fate lol. I realized that these wolves are much easier to kill so then I go back to the front door and decide to step out to lure the wolves closer to the door but they arent really attacking me.
Finally I got fed up and I decided to just ditch out the back door and I was able to just go out the back door and walk to the next houses and continue looting lol. . there were still 3-4 in the yard of that house but they didnt follow me.... yet.
I got a few houses down and finally two wolves catch up and they were easy to kill. I used my pickaxe and fought both at the same time. Really not as scary as i thought haha
Such a relief though.. Thank you for your reply
Is it really? I assumed it would be the firefighter axe or chopping axe...
Thats crazy. Now I feel dumb for swapping it out for an axe :/
shovel is a (nearly) guaranteed 1hit knockout on other players.
axe isn't bad either, especially if you have much to chop.
but with a pickaxe looting a town is a walk in the park (apart from other players).
I guess it depends on playstyles and a favorite loadout instead of another, I usually consider myself fully geared with a .308/7.62 mmR and a close quarter secondary, most times a shotgun or a suppressed SMG, so no room for bulky axes.
Oh yeah, as they are running towards you and you time the swing perfectly. Like playing baseball...
I enjoy the axe while in the process of gearing up, I always go for a fireaxe if I'm close to the station, but I'll ditch it with no regrets as soon as I need the second slot.
Thing is, if I can help it, I won't use a backpack ;-)
