Can you boil lake water to be good to drink?
In a cooking pot?

I don't think so, but there are water purification tablets.

Also, if you're healthy, you seem to be able to drink dirty water with no bad effects. If you're unhealthy, low blood etc., then you'll get sick from it.

Alright well can you fill up the barrel with water and then purify it, and be able to get water out of it?

You are supposed to be able to purify water by boiling but I have never tried it. I don't think you can use a barrel to drink from but You can empty a gas container and then fill it up with water and purify it and then use that for a water source at your base as long as you store it in a barrel or tent. Otherwise it will despawn.

You can't use sea water at all.

The boiling mechanic exists but I don't believe it actually works though I may be wrong. To do it, fill a cooking pot with water and put it onto (1) a portable gas stove or (2) onto a tripod over a fire or (3) onto a fireplace stove in a house.

You can pour water into a barrel, but you can't take water out of a barrel (yet...?). Maybe they'll fix that at some point.

You can fill a gas can up with river water, purify it with tablets, and store it in a barrel or tent.

You would have to distill sea water to drink it, which isn't an option in game.

Well what would cooking/boiling seawater/saltwater even do?

OP there is no point in boiling water atm.
a jerrycan, can be used as a fresh water well

Unless you have some way to catch and condense the water vapor, nothing in terms of making it drinkable.

Nothing, that was my point. You can't use it, and that is as it should be.

Boiling lake water however, ought to make it safe. But I am not sure if it actually does at the moment.
