If you were still bleeding or out in the open your character still exist in the server for about 30 seconds after you log out. Make sure you bandage all cuts you have and that you are safe, preferably in a building with doors closed. If youre in the open and a Zed strolls by he will get you, even if you just logged out.

Anyway that is the spirit, get in the habit of thinking that no matter how careful you are and how much loot you have, sooner or later you will lose everything. DayZ rule #1 is "don't get attached to your stuff"
