Help me to understand third person players
Hey,

in this thread, i would like to understand why so many people play on third person server and really dislike first person. Especially in a game like dayz, where the death is so punishing.

Don't get me wrong, i dont want to spread hate here. I really enjoy third person for myself if it comes to singleplayer games. But in multiplayer, i really fail to unterstand how people pick it over fist person.

Like pvp in third person looks so utterly stupid to me, you basicly sit behind walls or beside windows and peak with third person to spot people - while there is no way for the other person to see you. How people enjoy that?
Getting ambushed by people who probably observed you for 15 minutes and waited for perfect moment to catch you offguard.

In first person you can exactly tell if somebody is watching you - because, you would see him too, right? (provided you spot him)

its just a fun and stylish feature to see your charakter... i could not imagine to play dayz only at first person... it is typical for bohemia games...

its not all about pvp in this game.. if you have problems with that, maybe join first person only servers...

Ofcourse i play on first person, no need to tell me that. And i don't have problems with people doing it not. I just want to understand it.

So for you... you take all the downsides, like getting ambushed with no counterplay at all. Because its stylish?

Edit: i understand that pve argument. speaking of pvp here

Why people play only PVP in a game like DayZ? It has so many RP Potential, so many to see, so many adventures to live, why people cut themselve?

I switch between first and third person cause i like it.

Its your personal choice/view, no need to understand why someone do this or that........

Ask someone why he/she drives a green/brown/yellow car, i cant understand why someone would do that but look at the streets.

You can play what you want and like and i play what i want and like and we both play the same game, isnt that nice?

Cause third person lets you see the world differently, much like first person.
Another is the bobbing aint so bad.

Personally I need the freedom to shift back and forth, mostly because 3PP provides better spatial awareness and field of view, and I'm not talking about corner peeping now. 1PP view invariably feels like having a cardboard box over your head and looking out through an eye slit. The extra field of view from 3PP is, as far as I'm concerned, a fair compensation for the lack of input from senses a computer game just can't provide (peripheral vision, feel and smell mostly). In 3PP I feel more there than in 1PP. So 3PP is actually more immersive than 1PP, which is ironic since immersion is usually the #1 argument for 1PP beyond preventing corner peeping in 3PP.

In DayZ the 1PP camera also sits too low in the player model, which annoys me to no end. It just looks so stupid when you barely reach over the door handle on some doors and pour water over your head when drinking...

Lately I've been playing on a 1PP only server so I'm slowly getting used to it, but I wish they'd fix the camera placement and it would be so much more enjoyable.

As for the corner peeping in 3PP, I always wonder why game developers don't use camera collision from obstacles in front of the player's face, just like they usually do when there's an obstacle behind your back. Meaning if you're standing by a corner facing the wall (in order to use the camera to look around the corner), the camera collision would force the camera in close so all you'd see would be the back of your head, or even forced 1PP.

Uhmm... ok? No one did say anything other here.

I mentioned only PvP, because thats literally the only thing third person affects lol. It's not hard to understand that it doesnt matter if i do rp or kill zombies in first or third person.
But nice that you pointed it out. I also do like rp in dayz and do it alot - but what has this to do with this discussion?

That comparison makes 0 sense, because there is no real downside of choosing a yellow car.

Aaww man yea thats nice! But again - what has this to do with this? I already said that i dont wanna spread hate here or wanna blame someone. This is a forum meant for player discussions, and that's what i try to do. Should a rather opened the 15th "the night is too dark" thread?

I see. Thanks for your explanation. I disagree with that immersion thing, but that's just personal.
I feel the same as you in 1PP games, where you dont have this press alt option thingy to move your head around while walking or aiming. This gives me this kind of "freedom", like i have it in real life.

So, when there would be the option for you to play Dayz in VR - you would choose it over 3pp? (not taking the displaced 1pp camera position into account)

I think Scum uses some kind of system to prevent third person abuse. But it must be buggy as hell. I think its not that easy to implement, without making it too annoying for the players.

Without hesitation! DayZ would no doubt strain current controller tech for VR (I'd want to hold a gun for firefights, but that controller won't work for melee or driving) but it would probably be an incredible experience.

I don't want to give my own perspective on the difference between the two, so I'll just leave it as personal preference.

Some people like seeing their character in third person where many will argue that it does give an advantage in terms of vision and distance. Third-person 'peaking' is what many people believe makes the game silly and casual therefore losing on that hardcore experience. It's probably one of the biggest and hottest topics out there in gaming knowledge debating on 1st person vs 3rd person.

That being said, some people like playing first person as they enjoy the more hardcore experience and don't really mind looking at their character from a third person perspective. They enjoy imagining on what they see in the game as if it's their own eyes being in the world. In addition, they may dislike third-person 'peaking' as they feel it is a huge disadvantage to them especially in combat. As said before, this has been debated many times before to almost no end at all.

Personally for me, I enjoy playing both as long as the server has good ping and is stable. I'm in contempt with what modes I play in and try to make the best out of it.

i use 3rd person when running and when driving a car in a town or small area as the mirrors are ♥♥♥♥

Nothing to understand. It boils down to personal preference. For example, I don't really 'understand' why people want high loot/no stamina in Dayz. What that really means is I don't identify with their reasoning, because obviously they want to transform the game into a more softcore experience for quicker gradification. Typically these 'innocent' threads are just troll bait in disguise, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

As for your argument that you have no way to counter someone corner peaking with 3rd person... not sure what to say to that. You have the same advantages/disadvantages as they do, so if you are playing on a 3rd person server in the same way that you would play on 1st person then the fault lies with your gameplay choices (not speaking of YOU specifically but just anyone in general who does this.)

Depends on the situation. For example: If you walk around in a city, theres no way to tell if someone is peeking you in third person through a window, cause you cant angle your camera to see him like he can.
But you're right in a way, because you could generally do the same like he does. But in fact, in that kinda situation, you are at the same disadvantage as a player using first person - which is kinda ironic with what you said further down.

But that's not what this thread is about - really. As somebody else mentioned, this topic was already enough discussed.

I totally agree with you here
