Wooden planks

Hey so I heard you can only get wooden planks from lumber piles.
I found a bunch of lumber piles (each log is about 4 feet long) and tried to use the hacksaw on it, no dice. Can someone give me some guidance?

I was able to harvest planks with a hatchet or fireaxe, have yet to try hacksaw.

I can't do it with the splitting axe, the hatchet or the hacksaw. Can someone show me what these log piles are supposed to look like? I find them all over, but I think maybe they're the wrong thing.

ahh yes based on your wording you are probably correct and looking at a pile of lumber "logs" and not planks/boards. It will look like a pile of stacked wood planks in or near lumber yards. Google for a exact screenshot.

Such as, most building will require nails and a hammer/hatchet.

Along these lines... We found some covered stacks in a commercial area, which is where a map we were looking at said they would be. But we can't interact with them to try to get the planks. Tried hatchet and splitting axe, and even a knife to try to get the coverings off. (These are piles with white coverings on them).

Any ideas/thoughts on that? Do we need a hacksaw to get the covering off/access the pile?

I also found some stacks of long longs and can't interact with those.
