you can hide your loot in the middle of the forest under a bush or tree but then you will have to remember exactly the place haha

Use a shovel and bury it in some kind of box anywhere on the map, where u think its hidden. Backpacks don't work, medkits work, some kind of woodenboxes, chests, or ammoboxes. I don't play on vanilla usually so idk, but when I got lots of money I always bury it with a shovel somewhere.

People swear no. I found dozens looted on the village... No shovels... The shovel would despawn fast though.

like kid said but depends on the server also, things u can bury that i know of are -sea chest, dry backpack, dry bag, cooking pot, medical bag and a teddy bear.
you can also find a barrel or combine nails and planks to create storage
also depends on servers again but you can combine nails and planks to create other types of storage like wood storage by clicking instead of holding left mouse button. and modded servers have boxes with different storage items that u can place wherever u would like and dismantle them with a screwdriver in your hand.
as for hiding them that's a whole other animal and to what donHombino said cutting trees down will attract players and will only last till the server restarts so that's bout the worst thing u could do to "hide" your stash ... try to find 2 or more trees that are close together to where u can not see through them and put in best spot u can with in the least traffic area u can find or strategic place etc. also u can make a base and put said items in it.
p.s there are places u can bury things where the pile will not be visible by players but u have to know where u put them... if u download the Izurvive app u can place markers on the map and give people the name and password if u wish and they can see said markers on their map also. hope this helps u or anyone with squirreling away some acorns ;)
