Ok, wtf - seriously ?
So, i just bought this game and joined a server (Livonia) after briefly reading some stuff about the game (symbols mostly).

I spawned somewhere in a desolated area on a dirt road. It was raining. So i followed the road in a random direction and it ended after a short trip. Looked like it was the edge if the map, so i turned around and followed the road in the opposite direction.

After 10-15 minutes i finally reached a real road and could make out some buildings in the distance.

But by the time i got there my Food Symbol (the apple thingy) was already blinking red and i barely had time to search two buildings until the health cross symbol was blinking red and i died.

I did read that you can collect apples and such from trees, but couldn't find any on the way - how are supposed to play this game when you die of starvation so fast you barely have time to reach the first settlement after spawning ?

Did i miss something ? Is there a special key you have to press when looking for food in the wilds ?

My experience was similar, except that i had an apple and didn't know how to eat it, and instead dying of starvation i started fighting random hobo zombies that i killed them all but died bleeding, well kinda my character wakes up and falls back to floor repeated times.
I just respawned, maybe we need to find some guide to learn how to eat and how to stop bleeding to death.

But that's the fun of games like this, learning how to do all the ♥♥♥♥ and failing several times until we learn to stop doing so

I didn't have any food right from the start, just a glowstick and 2 rags.

I know how to bandage and how to eat - i just was not able to find any food in the short time, there was none i think.

Seems a bit harsh, i mean suvival should be hard but that seems a bit over the top.

eat, put your food in your hands an hit the action bar. apples can be found on the ground around apple trees.
Rutas Jan 27, 2020 @ 8:19am
in vanilla you start with an apple or something else to eat.

never would eat an apple from a priest.

if you're new to the game it's probably easier to start in Chernarus.
you'll find plenty of food n drink at the boats along the coast and you can switch to Livonia with the same char later when you're better prepped.
(this only works on official servers because they share the same hive)

This game is all about tests and fails, or Trial and error You need to operate everything through your hands. Press TAB to enter inventory, select an item, and drag to your hands. Food and water are very important inn any situation. Took me quite a few deaths to get into a good situation, First off, find a knife, it is one of your greatest assets. Try to avoid engaging zombies, as they damage your clothes, and once that happen, you can be cut, which will end up making you bleed. If you run out of rags, put a knife in your hand, find some cloths laying about (often the only things you will find everywhere) and make some more rags. Honestly, just working your inventory is the biggest battle, figure that out and you will have less issues. I was quite frustrated at first but now that I have lived for two consecutive weeks, it is quite addictive. Now i just need to find out how to get my mic to work in the game and I will be set

I did figure out most of the controls i think, i know how to eat, but i simply wasn't able to find anything before even reaching the first village, 2nd respawn i was closer to a town

There's no handholding (game characteristic). You die you live again it's not the end of the world.

Unlike Chernarus you'll spawn north of the map. You can navigate by the sun and the stars. Let's go.

ok 2nd time i also died of starvation, i managed to find a couple cans but nothing to open them with (no Hatchet or Knife or anything). there seems to be not really much time to do anything except search for food...

I found a Zuchini once in a gardenhouse, but there seems to be no Berrys or Fruit in the wilds

Did somebody say there were no guides for new players? LOLOLOLOLOLOL.....uh, sorry my cat jumped on the keyboard.
There's plenty of guides but I can safely say they do a bad job of stating what game version they apply to and that can kill you. All Livonia guides are current since this is it's initial update. Chenarus is another story though so your best bet is to review the devs' changelogs and stick with guides that plainly state what game version they represent.
As etwas stated above Livonia and Chenarus are not perfectly equivalent when it comes to fruit trees and there may be other things not yet discovered.
Good luck!

Unless you know what to look for there's no guides provided by the game You spawn and you start running and you learn. Imo it is part of the adventure especially when you're a new player. Or you can run straight off to google. True..

One tip when you’re very Low on food do not sprint. It burns your energy 3 times faster. Jog until you’re fed
Fluk3 Jan 27, 2020 @ 11:55am
Also, you do realize this is a survival game, right? It’s supposed to be hard. A challenge. Things aren’t handed to you on a silver platter. It’s brutal and harsh, like real life sometimes. You get no guarantees. You have to be resourceful, clever, skillful, sometimes lucky. Even then, you can die to one wrong choice. Over time your instincts and skills allow you to get better and better at overcoming adversity.

Things that were once hard become easier and you work your way up to the next challenge, and the next, be that learning how to keep dry and warm, fighting a wolf pack or a bear, or a group of bandits. Do you run, do you hide, do you fight, do you talk your way out of it...
