Base building
This is mentioned now and then as one of the major features the game is currently missing but is supposed to be implemented before release. I assume it means building structures such as basic houses, towers, ramps and walls, with storage and various facilities inside.

Bear with me if these questions are stupid, I haven't looked into base building in this or any other game, but how is it supposed to work? In what way will building myself a fortified cabin in the woods be better than just raising a tent? Will stuff stored in a base be protected from theft when I'm not online? Will it persist indefinitely? If not, why waste time on building a base that can be razed to the ground when I'm at work, or just be gone if I go on a two week holiday? Even a good sized clan will struggle to always have defenders at a base, so how are we supposed to protect it? There was some base building in the mod wasn't it, how did it work then?

Base building will be a section in the game were you dont have to rely on tents working as doors to hold your compound which is what people do right now , When base building is released you will be able to build a full complex building structure online with locked doors and different stories if you wish , It will probably be persistant , When you log off though I imagine your base will stay logged in which is abit sucky but offline raiding has always been a thing , As far as what you build as a base or where will be completely up to you, Protecting your base would be like protecting something now you just have to kill everyone near it and adapt to the surroundings availible. Im not quite sure what your trying to re assure yourself with these questions if youve never ever actually seen DayZ mod , I highly recommend hitting up youtube and looking into the system which was there as I see that , that is the push the dEv team are taking with the system now , I hope I could have helped you here with somewhat an answer to your question ^^.

Bases should never be 100% secure, but with mines, barbed wire for instance you should be able to make it a big pain to get in there.
It will be a choice between size and easy discovery and tents to easier hide your stash though.
Exactly what parts etc we don't know too much about but there are YT vids on what's already in the game files.

Right, I think I get the picture. I won't be putting any energy into it in other words, I prefer not to rely too much on stashing stuff. I do hide barrels and tents but I never leave behind anything I'm not prepared to lose anyway. I suppose you'll need to be a pretty decently sized and active group to keep a larger base somewhat secure over time. Nobody can be online 24/7 so...

Yeah, I think that's the main point of the base building. If the group is big enough, they can afford taking the time and building a fortress. If you're a loner, a tent and/or a barrel will be enough.

I assume that the barred doors we encounter in Stress Test .63 as of now (the doors inside which are secured by these large horizontal metal bars) are possibly giving us a glimpse on how at least barricading existing structures might look like in the future.

I kind of like the idea of "hijacking" an existing building in any village and using this as fortified base at least for some time. I would kind of prefer it to assembling custom built "shacks" or whatever structure using building templates, as in "The Forest" or "Just survive" e.g. as these tend to look somewhat generic and clutter the environment with strange looking assemblies which might impact a bit on the overall visual athmosphere in the game.

And how "plausible" is it actually to assume that a survivor of an apocalypse of this kind would invest all sorts of resources to build and fortify structures from the bottom up if there were already plenty of uninhabited, usable residential etc. buildings around?

But then, on the other hand, working on and assembling these kind of structures would be a fun game element in itself - and in the end, DAYZ is a game, supposed to be a "fun" experience.

Well we will see which way the devs will decide to go. Exciting for sure.

There is also barricading coming after launch, that could also be a decent option for small group/solo player.
But we'll have to wait and see really until we know more how it will work.

Yeah, probably much easier too keep your base "hidden" by keeping it in some out of the way building. I put a barrel in a house close to the coast some time back, I don't keep anything really valuable in it, just a pistol and some ammo along with a backpack and some other basic stuff to quickly get me back on my feet if I die. I go back to poke it now and then so it won't despawn, and it has never been touched. Or at least nobody has ever taken anything...

True. Not long ago I had a tent on a usually fully populated private server, pretty close to NWAF! It was there at least for three to four weeks, with SKS, Mosin and ammo inside and other stuff. Noone ever bothered to take anything. Or noone had discovered it. That was awesome.

Yes so personally I advocate "under the radar" base building/fortifying, but as I said, the other way to go is sexy as well...

Now we're talking! As long as we can find the right spot to dig at when we want to get stuff...

This will also be great mixed with the other options, sure put your spare clothes in a tent, then dig the goodies down 100m to the east.
I had an awesome base on vanilla DayZ mod, in the hills west of Lopatino. It was compartmentalised so to get through to the good stuff (my huey and my stash) you had to break through more than one wall. The admins on the server liked it so much they spawned a permanent water pump and fire barrel inside it for me so I was 100% self-sufficient.

Base building is necessary to keep DayZ alive. Well to be specific, endgame content is necessary. Base building is a great one.

Amen to that.
