For the question in the post: any fire arm would do, you dont need armor to fight zombies.
I see what you did there.
With melee attacks however - especially bare handed - helmets seem to have zero effect, unless that was changed a lot. Your best bet is to wear protective layers of cloth and a helmet on top to help prevent headshots. Also, cans, etc. stuffed into your clothes will absorb some damage, but again it is unclear if this only refers to projectiles.
It's puzzling, but after all these years these things are unclear, because they were changed so often and the old team was great at writing long walls of text that contained little to no useful information. So who knows? Definitely the Dayz devs, maybe they'll tell us someday...
Also, sneaking to avoid infected and not engaging groups seem like reasonable strategies, in other words: behave like you would in real world and don't sprint everywhere attracting zombies.
Pretty sure he's using a PUBG reference rather than what you assumed.
