I wouldn't recommend learning the map this way, as you won't be able to see the significant icons for different towns like police stations, hospitals, taps.
I learnt the map using the steam overlay.

True. Though you run the risk of an afk kill (albeit a very slim one).
Agreed, a second monitor will change your whole gaming experience for the better.
Almost every time my coworker alt tabs to look at the map he always gets smacked by an infected or two. The last time he got killed ( a few days ago ) and complained about it i finally got him to DL the android map.
btw, if you get smacked by zeds while on the map you definitely opened it in the wrong place.
