You can Store some backpacks, the sea chest under the dirt with a shovel ( make sure it isn't ruined when digging them out or stashing them ) and maybe even the wooden chest ( honestly i haven't built one yet ) but anyone can dig them up so again, no item security.
i only bother with vanilla so not sure what the mods have to offer.
Me and a buddy had a base done up for 2 months with all the tents, vehicles, walls, barrels, etc..
While sea chests (100 slots, 10 x 10) are the best storage unit that can be buried, they're rather rare and can only be moved around by hand unless you happen to have a car with 10 x 15 slots available where you can dump it into, generally a pain in the neck to haul from A to B.
It's far easier to just rely on Dry backpacks which can typically be found where "coastal" loot is located such as civillian containers or 'beached' boats along the coastline or around the larger lakes inland.
In a pinch you can make wooden crates (2 planks, 10 nails) which has 50 slots (5 x 10) where you can actually fit large rifles like mosin, SKS, SVD and the Winchester/M70, compared to dry backpacks that has 63 slots (7x9) which means while not capable to hold any of the large/long rifles, you can actually fit 2 assault rifles in the same dry backpack along with 5-6 magazines for said assault rifles.
Just be careful when you decide to pick a spot to bury your loot, while it is indeed possible to bury your loot under a tree, it's also possible that you'll bury said loot under a set of 'branches/leaves' which will not enable you to dig up your loot due to hitboxes or whatever the hell the issue is, currently got a wooden crate I can't get to even if I go on all fours and kiss the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ patch of dirt with the shovel in hand, hopefully I can cut down the tree and have it fall in a direction AWAY From said dirt patch.
