suppressors are broken for the most part, only weapon that 'works' is the VSS which has an 'integrated' silencer and my theory as to why it works is due to the fact that it's default 'suppressed value' is enabled from the get-go where as all the other weapons where you have to APPLY a suppressor fails to apply said value properly.
However at least the SOUND is somewhat suppressed so while the zombies will aggro, players from afar is less likely to hear the shot although suppressors have been nerfed in 1.04 hear.

Silencers aren't heard by players (sort of), but to the zombies there is no difference. I don't think this is how it will be in the future, but then again I don't think AI is anywhere near its goal yet. Use them for fun and don't shoot unprovoked unless you want to make yourself a target. Melee is the way to go with zombies. And you can easily outmanoeuver them in cities. Much too easily...

in reality supressors just supress the sound, its still not hearing safe for most rifles like m4's or aks, but zombies might be broken asf too.

Suppressors are perfectly fine ATM. In real life main (if not the only) purpose of such device is to eliminate muzzle flash and alter the sound of a gunshot so it might be mistaken for something else that's not worth attention in a firefight, and that's just about it. No weapon is completely silent. First, subsonic ammo is needed which is simply not present in the game, thus guns that fire supersonic rounds (like M4A1 or SVD-63) will always be heard by zombies from far far away. Second, all guns (and this is especially true for automatic weapons) have moving parts that produce their own distinctive sounds, even trigger 'click' is loud enough to draw attention in like 20yds radius. Third, hot gasses need to actually go somewhere, suppressor decreases gas pressure but it's not zero anyways so there always will be 'clap' that can be heard at ~30yds (MP5SD5) to ~150yds (SVU, a suppressed variant of SVD-63). Even the most silent mass-produced firearm in the world, soviet PSS using unique SP-4 piston rounds, is nowhere close to silent xD So you see, here DayZ is much, much more accurate than most shooter games. This is not spy action B-movie where guards dont give a ♥♥♥♥ about suppressed AKM being fired right next to them. Welcome to real world.

In Vanilla, gunshot aggro zeds to 200m and suppressor to 100m.
If you are on PC your admin can install mods like BetterSuppressors or PvZmoD_Tweaked_Zombies... to solve the problem

Jump to 3:21 for a comparison. No muzzle device, muzzle brake, suppressed.

The thing is people tend to confuse suppressed with hollywood pewpew suppressors. Also the bullets in game are all supersonic except the 9x39 for the VSS and the .22

Supressors work fine. Use a supressed low caliber pistol for taking out zombies
Enforcer Jun 29, 2019 @ 7:33am
The thing why players think the suppressors are broken is they don't understand why the infected can pinpoint the location.
The AI hears the report of the gun and / or the supersonic crack and does the math........this is also why if you fire a round without a suppressor without any infected having line of sight to you and run away and hide before they see you they will got to the spot they last heard the shot go off. And as some players reported if you fire a suppressed gun they might even go to where the bullet impacted because that is what they heard.

This is where the IJ-70 in .380 comes in handy. I always try to get this to dispatch infected i can't reach with a melee weapon. But they still hear you if you fire too many rounds in quick succession.
Timothee Jun 29, 2019 @ 9:09am
This may have changed since 1.04, but if your supressor was in 'pristine' condition it wouldnt aggro zeds even from very close. That was with a pistol supressor on the FX45.

As soon as the supressor becomes worn it will agro zeds, still good for not attracting other players though, Especially now gunshots sounds travel 3.5K now.
