DayZ
Night time is still unplayable
"heerrr durrr git gud find a flashlight ya neeewb!" Yeah anyway so in a world where actual productive discussion exists night time is still worthless as a game mechanic. You can't use your free hand to hold a light source because our Olympic athlete with insane survival education can't utilize both hands to hold a glowstick and a hammer at the same time despite most items being used one handed. So unless you server hop to look around during daytime over and over or get EXTREMELY lucky and find tactical gear on your first day... in this game littered with players and zombies combat becomes a crapshoot. What's more, looting is just no longer fun when the game's shading makes looking around a matter of spamming the tab button. There's no incentive to play the game as intended unless you're several "in game" days into surviving. I love how hardcore the survival elements are but this is isn't difficulty. It's completely unplayable 90% of the time. Night time should be a daunting challenge instead of locked behind RNG.

Seems a lot of you completely missed the point of what the OP was saying. Night, as it is right now, is extremely frustrating to play. If you're lucky, you will find a battery and a flashlight, but only if you're lucky. Even if you do find a working flashlight, you still can't use your second hand for, say, holding a weapon. Defending yourself is a big problem for no real reason other than a stupid technical limitation that shouldn't be there.

And as OP pointed out, the lighting system during the night is crap. That is, it doesn't exist at all, not counting flashlights and such. Items on the ground completely blend in with it. Have any of you seen an interior? It looks like garbage. Everything is the same, and noticing small stuff is difficult because of how dumb it all looks.

I want to play at night, but I don't want to deal with bullcrap. It can be fun and interesting to play at night, but right now, it's just... not.

But there is plenty of options for peeps without NVGs:

Headtorch being the best option currently, however unless you happen to find one with the red light, anyone can see you from a mile away, Glowsticks is the best way to keep yourself concealed while having a source of light, you can ATTACH glowsticks to your backpack.
Beyond that you'll be left with handheld devices for light though like torches, roadflares, flashlights, alternatively in case you happen to play on any of the official server hives (normal/hardcore) then you could just disconnect and join a server with day time.
The Dayz life...On a scale of 0 to 10, spawning in on the beach at night probably ranks at 9 out of 10 for difficulty to survive. The only thing more difficult is if it's raining as well. Surviving a night spawn is challenging even for veterans of the game, for a player like yourself who has little more than 50 hours of intermittent game time over a couple years it would be near impossible. Navigation for a start is going to be very tough, since a player this new cannot have much knowledge of the map, never mind finding out near which town he/she is, and where this town is even located.

This makes me wonder why someone as inexperienced as you would choose the most difficult scenario to start playing in, and as a result gets so frustrated that flaming at the game seems the only option. If you want to play at night with barely anything on you, well then you must suffer. Maybe first learn how things work and where to find what, then go for the more difficult challenges. If you have the right equipment, night time is quite playable as it is, it's also survivable for a new spawn, but's its very tough.

Let's whine how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ night time is instead of utilizing the tools we already have and are proven to work.
^ see above.

OP just wants a nvg and is :steamsalty: he can't find one.

Yeah. All the people whinging about night being unplayable want is to be able to see at night without using light sources. To see without being seen. Tough luck dudes, apart from the silly "night light" you're out of luck unless you put the effort in to find nightvision. Just light a torch and go looking, or stick to permaday servers.

Nighttime is unplayable. Because it's dark. You know what I would do during a real night? Sleep. I would never ever go out at nighttime to search for something because all that I would find is a bite or a bullet. Forcing people to play during the night is ridiculous and is not realistic at all.

LOL at sentence #1 and #2
Many people work at night. F.e. criminals, hunters or fishermen who can only catch their prey during night time. Some fishermen go out by boat ( not a ship a simple 5m boat ) and some move along the shore between the tides.
Nobody forces you to play during night time. It's part of the experience.
What's ridiculous is that players complain about night being too dangerous but would happily run into a fight anytime....

I work 3rd shift. So I work at night. If you don't like the night time play on perma day servers. Literally nobody is forcing you to play at night

stop playing nighttime then.

I really enjoy nighttime. I can understand your problems. If you enter a server close ti nighttime is a pain in the ass (or just a challenge.. Depends on the point of view - whatever..) to find what you need in the limited time... I'm with you on this, but otherwise if you know what you're doing it's not a real problem... One other point we both knew already... It don't need to be nighttime in dayz and you get shot without any clue from who and where... Sooo, long story short: adapt or get extinguished. Law of nature! 😘
Nvidia? Right click on you desktop/ Nvidia Control Panel/ adjust video colour settings.

Obviously, you're just calibrating your monitor, right?

I don't even play Day Z (getting to it, cost put me off for years, plus the many glitches and troubles it had), but even I know how bad night time is. I have no idea why, the second it turns night time, it goes pitch black. I mean, in reality, I can see a decent amount in the dark. In other survival games, you can see things a decent amount..But Day Z? Blind. It's not "morning, afternoon, evening, night", it's "morning, afternoon, evening, THEY TOOK MY EYES!".

If they increased the brightness by even 5%, a lot less players would resent the darkness.

You guys are too used to hollywood nights where you can still see things because otherwise it would be stupid to show a dark screen to the audience. Nighttime is dark without street lamps. DayZ doesn't compromise like other games. Too bad players abused gamma so much othjerwise we would have better night time illumination.

I've sat through several blackouts before, you can still see bits and pieces. I'm not saying players shpuld be able to see for a few hundred miles, just that they should at least be able to see the broad side of a barn. Also, moonlight is a thing, but obviously coding that in would be super low on the to-do list.

Weird how we just went through endless complaints about nightlight making it too easy...
Almost like people have different tastes...
A server gamma boost option for night time on that light might be worth suggesting though.
Not just on/off.
Though official forum would be best place for that.
