I believe you can use the pickaxe as well.

Yes, only the shovel, pickaxe is used for mining.

nah im done with this game for now. doesnt mean i dont want it to get better or that i wont be in chat to watch things. i just refuse to play with the garbage inventory system and mechanics. still a bad game. but im hoping for the best. thanks for being a fan of my conversations here in steam.

I recently tried out the modded servers with the DZSALauncher and found one I really like. At first it sounded meh to have a trader, but it adds a new dynamic to the game and adds a really busy meeting place. Much recommended - at least, until vanilla Dayz really gets to its final state.

As for your question: you drop the bag and then use the shovel while looking at it. You don't have to dig a hole beforehand.
