How far away can you hear...
someone opening a door. Trying to open a metal shed door sounds like a train coming through. I also get the shuffling of feet when I look left and right while stationary. Sounds as loud as a platoon marching by.

Some sounds are ok, but others are too loud. Like chewing food... You can clearly hear someone chewing from 30mts.

It is ridiculous.

ahh you must not have been around when the bug was that allowed the entire server to hear when you were drinking from a can
You mustve not been around when the whole server could hear you splitting a pile of rounds. Or now that we have the amphibia bug (was it fixed?)

And?.. do you want a cookie? Pointing out bugs in old versions to try to justify poor sound design in the current version (eating food too loud) doesnt work.

@yalleh crafting bandages with an axe is not weird at all, it's being inventive and creative with the means you got at your disposal. An axe is a sharp or maybe even sharper than a knife so you could perfectly use it like a knife, or stuck it somewhere so you can fringe over the blade with the fabrics. Hell, I'd even craft bandages with my teeth.
My mistake.. I craft bandages all the time.. I meant to say the sound an axe makes while crafting rags is a bit off (it sounds like you are chopping a tree).

Basically every sounds is at least a tad too loud. Eating, drinking, loading weapons/magazines can be heard 20m away through walls. Believable sound is what they should focus on next.
im pretty sure this is because of the gameplay balance. Some sounds are obnoxiously loud for sure, like eating, but some sounds are loud on purpose, like footsteps, reloads etc.

And what would that purpose be?

Be a game. Certain liberties are taken in games to make it work like a game since you are somewhat detached from that world due to technological and hardware limitations. Like the 3rd person view is to accomodate for limited FOV. Peripheral dots in the arma series fix awareness issues caused by low fps/stutter. The sound environment is limited by the users hardware too. Not all people have the headphones that can mimic the entire range of human hearing oerfectly and to the T, so games can accomodate this by designing the sounds of the game to allow for a bit of leeway. Humans also make plenty of other characteristic sounds when they go about their lives and perfectly mimicing this would be very constraining on the hardware. How the sound bounces around surfaces etc.

Tl;Dr: Games are not and currently cannot mimic real life, thus some compromises must be made to make it act realistic, instead of sounding realistic.
