DayZ
Realistically... how often should you have to eat and drink?
In a recent session, I ate (6) apples to get my hunger and thirst levels to green. I ran to the next town and within a 20 or so minute period (real time) I was hungry again. This seems incredibly unrealistic to me, especially in a more desparate situation where survival is so important. At this pace, I'm going to have to eat 30 apples just to get through one day.

In an average day, a person eats two or three meals over the course of 24 hours. How much food should someone have to eat in this game and how often?

Well in a game context having to eat every 6 hrs of real time would be quite insignificant. I do however think it should take about double the time to get hungry in game. Would make it a little less annoying.
When you are light green on energized and hydrated, that doesn't mean your "storage" is full, you can eat way more than that...
On the other Hand, this is a game, and a part of the survival aspect is the need to find food and something to drink, in real life people can go without food for weeks, without drinks for days..would make the game too easy...

Now before we get into the argument that some game mechanics are "unrealistic" (Within a games environment), how long should it take for a broken leg to heal within DayZ before you are off running again?

I'm sure at 1.0 we will see some tweaks and even balancing. Hence why "In Real Life" circumstances can only have calculations representing those situations within a game.

Dont compare anything in reallife with a video game.....because its a video game not real life.

Strange how people cant grasp that concept....

Maybe the lines between reality and illusions are pretty thin for some :)

Oh Macca dont start on the majic stick again......:)

There will surely be a "Pink Unicorn" mod in the future.
They only need an apple and a sip of water once a day. and they will be able to define a "hightspeedalwaysrunning" button...

An average man needs 2500 (a day)calories to maintain, and 2000 to lose one pound of weight per week

An apple has 52 calories.

A chicken breast 165 calories.

A tin of baked beans 390 calories

I'm not one of the people who believes DayZ should be more realistic.

However, there are many blatant things about this game that time and time again seem to get blown over or ignored by the realism purisists among us. This is one of them. You didn't answer my question, so I'm going to ignore yours as well.

What is the point of saying this? Are you suggesting that the (6) apples I ate was just not enough? In real life, I don't even think I could eat six apples in a row if I tried.

So making the game realistic makes it too easy?

You see... this touches on something that is very close to the overall annoyance I have with some of the aspects of this game and the way the community decides to react. There is an element of people who just want this game to be difficult to play. They don't care about whether or not it is realistic.

Your entire argument was based on - "This seems incredibly unrealistic to me" + "In an average day, a person eats two or three meals over the course of 24 hours".

You know how many calories our survivors would need to consume just to maintain the constant traversing or even the strict diet required for such endurance?

Yet something like the magical splint is ingored simply because it is beneficial with the minimum amount of effort required. Remember you brought "In Real Life" comparisons into this topic.

Oh, i answered your question.

"Maca - I'm sure at 1.0 we will see some tweaks and even balancing. Hence why "In Real Life" circumstances can only have calculations representing those situations within a game."

Stop with the "In Real Life" argument when obviously other gameplay-design mechaincs couldn't accurately function like their real life counterparts (There has to be some time acceleration, just like the 4 hours of Day & Night cycle) , after all we are talking about a survival game.

What entire argument? I didn't argue anything. I asked a question in the subject line. I gave an example where I ate (6) apples and 20 minutes later needed to eat again.

I simply made the statement that this is unrealistic. I think it's completely silly that I can eat (6) apples in a row and then get a notification in game so soon that I'm hungry again.

The answer is no... I do not know how many. I just know that current mechanics are ridiculous and unrealistic.

I'm not ignoring the splint mechanic either. As I said previously, I'm not one of the people who think this game is not realistic enough. I'm just a bit over the selective outrage from realism purists.

That's not an answer. I want your actual opinion of how often you think people should have to eat and drink over the course of one day in this game. You gave me a generic "we will see tweaks". That's not an actual direct answer to a direct question.

So making the game realistic makes it too easy?

So what about sleep, rest, illness and many other realistic elements that would affect ones character. Not forgetting about the magical replenishment of resources which if realistic wouldn't magical respawn, nor would the animal population if over hunted.

Again it is just a game and the mechaincs can only replicate certain circumstances with the games environment.

8 hour days and a limited diet along with travel and once fully green (as in fully hydrated and energized) an hour or two. Actually once all character statistics are fully green and you travel by jogging you can go a few hours without food and depending on clothing (Overheating) water.

All those values in the link below will have an impact when it is all tweaked and balanced (Then again it is balanced currently).

easy answer....

this game is meant to have a balance of fun/realistic.

if your complaining about not being realistic enough, then I guess if you die, you should lose the game, because I mean.. there is no revive in real life...

if you want that hardcore real life simulator, find a mod that supports that, or make your own?

I don't want that hardcore life simulator. I want a fun game. I'm with you.

Sure why don't the dev's just take out all the survival mechanics altogether from a survival title? :steamfacepalm:
Eat until your message is "stuffed" in red... then eat 2-3 more apples and no more than this. You should be able to cross two towns just fine.... each town should have apple trees about unless they are cities... but they will have food but if you want to play it safe... try the outskirt buildings for more apple trees.
