Only way to find yourself on any map is to look for landmarks and compare them with the map.
The best way to learn the map tho is just explore, if you see a town or a landmark just go and check it out, eventually places will become familiar and ull remember where the best loot spots are :)
And I hope they keep it that way. Using your watch, shadow, and direction of the sun to find your bearing was always helpful. Love the fact the devs didn't make loot intentionally stand out with some flashing overlay. Love that we don't have a bunch of little icons popping up all over the screen indicating locations or players. Glad they leave the arcade out. The GPS will work as the magic map once found.
Once I find a map in game I feel comfortable using the DayZtv map. Once they fix the map in game, comms, and get the GPS working there shouldn't be any need for outside apps. Of course there will be those that want an edge over others.
The Town signs are the key if you can't recognize where you are at. Just takes a minute for them to load and be legible. Problem being the DayZtv map shows that name in the smaller text under the English version, still making it difficult sometimes.
