'Cuz item-based doom bolts kinda suck if they're manually-casted. Procced Doom Bolts are better since they're basically free damage, and Doom Bolt from actual Occultist mastery is best of all. Even with no skill point buffs, Lv12 Doom Bolt can deal 1282 Chaos and 890 Vitality in base damage on a direct hit, as well as chopping off anywhere from 1/5th to 1/3rd of the enemy's max HP if they're not immune to HP reduction effects.
The gun I'm using removes the cooldown from Doombolt and converts its vitality damage to pure chaos, and I'm dual wielding them... but my rank 7 Doombolt with 0.4 second cool down still reports as half the dps as a 1 point Aether Ray (not even converted to chaos which I am spec'd into)
DPS for abilities with cooldowns is not a very useful stat as it counts the cooldown. It also doesn't count crits or whatever devotions your ability might proc or enemy resistances/your RR abilities etc.
I typically account for those in my head. I was just expecting the damage reporting to be accurate.
So ya, Doombolt does double the reported damage... (for direct hits, but how are you missing in the first place?)
Area damage doesnt count as a direct hit for the double damage bonus I assume
