Grim Dawn
Does Doom bolt ever get awesome?
I mean, it's pretty nice and does have a lot of base damage... plus, I'm wearing the maurader talisman so I can dualwield grimbolts so I currently have a 0.4 second Doombolt which is great

So, I like it for now... but does it ever enter the top tier?

Build for Chaos/Vitality damage, and get yourself some -chaos resistance and -vitality resistance effects to slap on enemies before boltspamming them. Are you obtaining Doom Bolt from an item, or from native Occultist mastery?

'Cuz item-based doom bolts kinda suck if they're manually-casted. Procced Doom Bolts are better since they're basically free damage, and Doom Bolt from actual Occultist mastery is best of all. Even with no skill point buffs, Lv12 Doom Bolt can deal 1282 Chaos and 890 Vitality in base damage on a direct hit, as well as chopping off anywhere from 1/5th to 1/3rd of the enemy's max HP if they're not immune to HP reduction effects.

The gun I'm using removes the cooldown from Doombolt and converts its vitality damage to pure chaos, and I'm dual wielding them... but my rank 7 Doombolt with 0.4 second cool down still reports as half the dps as a 1 point Aether Ray (not even converted to chaos which I am spec'd into)
Well one of the best doom bolt spammers is which is wierd a freaking pyromancer with harbringer set. That stuff just wipe things. -35 ress on DB + some -%chaos ress means dead hero in one hit. And it heals you for full hp with decent ADtHC. Usable even with witchblade but hell maybe Sentinel could be best now.
Ooops, Doom Bolt's DPS tooltip doesn't take its damage doubling into account... it's stronger than reported
if you love doombolt so much try use harbinger set.

DPS for abilities with cooldowns is not a very useful stat as it counts the cooldown. It also doesn't count crits or whatever devotions your ability might proc or enemy resistances/your RR abilities etc.
Ive never liked doom bolt but any skill can be made effective if you pump it up enough with item bonsues and such
All i ever needed from Doombolt to be awesome is the sound it makes :DoomBolt:

I typically account for those in my head. I was just expecting the damage reporting to be accurate.

So ya, Doombolt does double the reported damage... (for direct hits, but how are you missing in the first place?)

Area damage doesnt count as a direct hit for the double damage bonus I assume

This is the case. Doom Bolt has a small AOE around the victim. You'll never miss the primary target, who takes double damage, but anything else within the AoE takes the reported damage from the skill.
