How do I set so the game will NOT stay on the background not minimized....

Well.....

So I set my game to windowed mode.

Then I alt tab. It works as intended, the other window now is stacked on top of my Don't Starve.

You still follow?

Then I alt tab. The game stays on the background and refuses to be minimized like it should be.

So... You're saying when you're using the game in fullscreen- it won't minamize at all when you alt-tab? So if you have a window that doesn't cover the whole screen, you can see the fullscreen DS behind it? Did I get that right...? x.x

Well, firstly: Why not just close the game when you don't need it? (ie: save and quit, close game, etc)
Secondly, why is this an issue? You could just cover up the un-minimalized DS window with another window, right? (I know sound can still play in the background, but you can turn that off in settings if thats really an issue)
Thirdly, are you playing on a Windows or Mac? I know on a Windows, you can "alt tab" to desktop, which minimalizes everything (not sure if that applies to Macs), so that should force the fullscreen DS to minimalize.
Finally, please don't kill any kittens!!! .o.!

No. I'm on Windows but alt tab only makes the game stays on the background full screen while another window I focus on stacked on top of it. It makes the whole desktop laggy.

And I alt tab alot for skype etc. It's my habit AND certainly an issue for me if the game doesn't behave as I want.

If thats true, just minamilize to desktop (it should be the last option in the tab selection), then open the tab you want to open from there. Alternatively, if you can't manage that- you can also minamilize to desktop by clicking the far right bottom corner of the start bar

I had the same problem. Go to Settings - Video and at Display Mode select Fullscreen instead of Borderless Window
