Thoughts on Lureplant Farming?
Is it waste of resources? Is the meat helpful?

The meat is pretty useless, since it won't go in the crockpot. There are so many better ways to find food. However, killing lureplants and planting the seeds gives you a hound defence. It only works once the lureplant has had a few days to grow eyeplants. Lureplants don't grow in winter, and any eyeplants they previously had will disappear in winter, so it's only good for other seasons. Occasionally, red hounds will burn the seed so collect and plant as many as you can (widely separated). In RoG, you can extinguish fires by several methods, the safest being an ice-staff, so that can save your burning seed. For winter, pengulls can be spawned by walking around coasts, and are a great hound defense (and occasionally a source of food on the move).

i really never use it's meat, but i do use lureplants for 2 things:

1. garbage disposal. great way to get rid of things you don't need (tools/weapons with low durability) to keep that camp nice and tidy.

2. clearing aggressive bees. i'll plant the lureplant a small running distance away from the hives that way they don't eat the honey bees. once i catch a honey bee, i'll run to the lure plant and let it take the killer bees, that way i can catch bees (that belong to the specific hive) and destroy the hive without that small annoyance.

they're also great if you want to catch bees for the bee mine. just lure a bunch of bees into it and then destroy the lureplant before it digest them. it's faster than catching the bees one at time.

I only harvest it sometimes. Always feel afraid to harvest it because I encountered game crash frequently when harvesting it. Prefer to use them as attention distractor for monster.

As for hound defense, they are useless, a single fire hound will die and burn, if even one eye goes on fire, the rest will follow suit (this necessarily will happen for obvious reasons), causing the entire plant to close up with no eyes remaining. Also it may wither in summer. In winter, the lureplant will not have any eyes at all so it's completely bunk. I experimented with lureplants as a hound defense and found them to be useless.

You do need several of the lureplants for hound defense, and it's tedious checking the status of the eyeplants, but they can be used for defense because you can plant them (almost) anywhere. In RoG, you can extinguish fires several ways (fertilizer, ice-staff, etc), so the lureplants actually become more useful against hounds (especially as there are now 3 non-winter seasons) as you can prevent the seeds being burnt. The point is to have a lot of different mob defenses against hounds until you have a panic room.

I usually use lureplants to farm silk for me. Just plant them next to an spider nest.

Okay, I've just found yet another weakness of lureplants as hound defense in RoG. It was spring, and I got a lot of frog rain (needed the bush hat at night, darn frogs dropping all around my firepit). The frogs killed every one of my 3 lureplants. Then, in summer when I got a red hound attack, and really needed them, I had nothing (a few frogs left, and I survived but got a few things burnt). So I'm coming around to the view that they're not that great. Still, I got good use of them up to 120 days, and in general it's a case of using whatever is available.

Next summer, I'm going to have the ice flingomatic, and hopefully I can set up some better mob defenses and start on a panic room. But in summer, if you don't have the ice flingomatic, you're pretty much confined to your base so lureplants are better than nothing.

Isn't it the exact opposite? If you don't have a ice flingomatic, won't your base just burn down if it's on your screen?

Yes, things don't burn when they're off screen completely. I've found perfectly fine twig plants and berry bushes in seperate biomes that wasn't in focus. Game gets real tough when you start in spring and you can't locate ice and enough stone/gold for the coming summer.
