Satoru's Master Bugfix/Troubleshooting Thread
The original thread was lost and we kind of didn't notice until now. A big apology to everyone and especially Satoru who created the original thread. Thankfully I managed to save it under the paranoia that it would be lost on the forum reshuffle. So here it is in it's original glory. Satoru you're more than welcome to contact me and we can adjust this thread and let you repost it if you'd prefer.

THIS THREAD WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE UPDATED

Intel HD cards are NOT supported. Or msiexec (1/1) crash

The minimum system requirements for Payday2 do not include Intel HD platforms. You need to be mindful of meeting the minimum system requirements for a game. Any more than if a game did not support XP, that is your responsibility for meeting the minimum requirement, not the developer.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/218620/discussions/0/864976114945048227/

Here is a potential fix that may help users.

1 - goto c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\payday2
2 - then there should be an exe file called "payday2_win32_release"
3 - right click on this, click troubleshoot compatability, and when it says test this program using recomended settings, clci on it, then payday 2 works, after you close the game, clic ksave these settigns and payday 2 will work everytime.

If the above doesn't work
1 - goto c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\payday2
2 - then there should be an exe file called "payday2_win32_release"
3 - right click on this,
4 - Go to teh compatibility tab
5 - check 'run this program in compatibilty mode'
6 - select windows XP SP3
7 - Click apply

Use the fix below only if the above doesn't work

DO NOT DOWNLOAD FILES FROM PLACES LIKE MEDIAFIRE/DROPBOX/ETC. Any user hosted file may contain viruses/keyloggers/trojans/etc.

However this is a 'hack' that may help

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/34778/

You need to create an account on nexusmods to download the file.

Note downloading dll files is dangerous and not something you should do. Use this file at your own risk. Any problems you have with the game using this hack are NOT bugs with the game. You use this hack at you own risk and you're on your own if stuff doesn't work.

Restart Steam

Try this first as this will ensure you have the latest patched version. You must

OPT OUT of the Steam Client Beta

This seems to cause crashes as well. Opt out for now.

Reverify your Game cache

1. Try verifying the integrity of the game cache:
1a) Go open up your Steam client program and go to the "LIBRARY" section
1b) Right-click Payday in the list of games to the left - a drop-down menu will appear
1c) Click the menu option "Properties" at the very bottom of the drop-down menu - a dialog box will appear
1d) Click the "LOCAL FILES" tab in the upper part of the dialog box
1e) Click the third button that reads "VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE..."

If reverifying your Game cache doesn't work, try removing the assets folder beforehand

When you refresh yourgame cache, you should also remove an assets folder beforehand. Read more on how to do this below.

1) Right click on Payday 2 in your Steam Library
- Choose "Properties"
- Open the "Local Files" tab
- Click on "Browse Local Files"
2) A new folder will open
3) Find and delete the "Assets" folder
4) Go back to Steam
5) In the "Local Files" tab
- Click on "Verify Integrity of Game Cache"
6) You will see a message window saying something simular to
"1065 files failed to validate"
7) Close that window and wait until steam has finnised the download until you try to start up the game

Reinstall the game

Yes you must try this. It has helped a few people.

1) Remove local content of the game
2) Restart Steam
3) Reinstall the game

Having problems downloading the game

Change your download region in
Steam->Settings->Downloads
Try different regions and see if that helps

Also an anti-virus program may be blocking the installation. Try disabling your anti-virus

Update your video drivers

It's important to be running the latest stable release for your video drivers

AMD: Catalyst 13.4 (avoid the beta drivers as tehy're generally not that great)
Nvidia: Nvidia 320.49

If you're having problems follow the standard procedure for reinstalling your video drivers

1) Uninstall existing drivers
2) REBOOT
3) Install latest version
4) REBOOT

Laptop Users Force your AMD/Nvidia card

Laptop users should force Payday2 to use the AMD/Nvidia card instad of the integrated one

Nvidia:

You MUST be running Nvidia driver 320.49. Older versions of the Nvidia drivers do not force the card properly.

* Right click your desktop
* NVIDIA Control Panel ->
* Manage 3D Settings ->
* Program Settings.
* Select Payday 2 Beta Launcher as the program then add it. The Payday2 launcher is in
c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\payday2 beta\
* Then 2. Select High Performance NVIDIA Processor.

AMD:

DO NOT SET PAYDAY 2 TO HIGH PERFORMANCE!

Follow the instructions below to set the CCC properly.

Thanks to Carmie for this valuable tip concerning AMD mobile cards

1. Open up CCC (Mobility)
2. Go to "Power > Switchable Graphics Method"
3. Tick "Select the graphics processor manually or based on power source." and click "Apply"
4. A new option would (and should) appear under Power. This is "Power > Switchable Graphics" which was previously unavailable.
5. In here, there should be a two buttons under "Choose a Graphics Processing Unit:". Click on "High-performance GPU".
6. A confirmation should pop up asking if you want to confirm the change. Click on "Change". You may experience your screen flickering a bit. This is normal. Your computer is switching to the AMD GPU.
7. After it finishes, CCC should start saying that the "Current active Graphics Processing Unit" is the High-performance GPU. You may also run "dxdiag" and look in the "Display" tab and check what the device name is. If it says anything with "AMD" in it and not "Intel" then...
8. Congratulations! You're done.

My AMD Laptop Doesn't Support the Switchable Graphics Option!

Here is a helpful tip from Hawkes that might help those users who have older AMD Mobility cards that either don't work with newer CCC or have other issues with CCC

what i ended up doing to fix it was disabling my intel HD 3000 graphics card which forced my desktop resolution to 800x600 i tried running Payday 2 a blackscreen pulled up then closed i re-enabled my graphics card tried it again and payday 2 worked!

Right Click "My Computer"
Manage
Go to "Device Manager"
Go to "Display Adapters"
Find yoru Intel HD card
Right click->Disable
REBOOT your computer
Launch Payday2
Go back to Device Manager
Find your Intel HD card
right click->enable
Force close Payday2
REBOOT your computer
Relaunch steam
Launch Payday2

Turn on Morphological Filtering using CCC and now getting flawless framerates.
Also make sure that the Wait for Vertical Refresh setting is turned to "Off Unless Application Specifies"

Improve FPS and Input Lag by Reducing Shadow Maps

For those users on lower end systems, disabling shadows can have a big impact on your FPS. If you're on Intel platforms, or low end Nvidia/AMD laptop mobile video chipsets, this can help out your performance.

First what you need to do is Show hidden folders you can google it or go to
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/show-hidden-files-in-windows-7/

Then find the folder "C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Local\PAYDAY 2"
In this folder there is a file called "renderer_settings.xml"

Find the section
<d3d_device
adapter_index = "0"
resolution = "1920 1080"
windowed = "false"
refresh_rate = "60"

Edit these entries to the appropriate resolution and refresh rate.

For overscanning problems, aka black bars on the screen, tweak the refresh rate.

Run Steam as an Administrator

Fix for keyboard/mouse lag

I don't have the source but this has worked for some people.

Go to c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\payday2
Edit the context.xml file
Find the line that contains
<physics settings="settings/physics_settings" fps="60" physx_effects="hardware" multithreaded="true"/>

Set multitraeded to false

<physics settings="settings/physics_settings" fps="60" physx_effects="hardware" multithreaded="false"/>

Delete AppData Payday2 folder

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU HAVE AN EXISTING PAYDAY2 SAVE

This may help with crashes, but potentially will delete your save.

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN PERIL

http://steamcommunity.com/app/218620/discussions/0/864976114873463187/

1.) Navigate to your AppData folder by typing in %appdata% into your start menu search bar.

I uninstalled that driver, restarted my computer, reinstalled it using the disc and then I hit "ok" when the prompt to optimize the mapping came up after first starting Killer Network Manager. So far I have done two heists with no problems,

Uninstall other esoteric Network Drivers

As per the above example. If you have some kind of 'weird' network card or network manager please as a test uninstall it. These managers maybe doing something that's unexepcted and dropping you from the game.

Incompatible Software

The following is a list of some incompatible osftware. Try uninstalling these if you have them
  • ASUS Gamer OSD
  • ASUS Smart Doctor
  • Display Link
  • Qualcomm Killer Network Manager

FPS Optimization Tips

* Force PhysX onto CPU
Open Nvidia control panel, find Physx configuration and choose CPU.
Now run the game and see if it worked for you guys.

Very bright/white main-menu
This is caused by forcing Anti-Aliasing through your Gpu software.

AMD:
1) Right-click on your desktop
2) Click "AMD Catalyst Control Center"
3) Click "Gaming"
4) Click "3D Application Settings"
5) Look for "Anti-Aliasing Mode" and set it to "Use application settings"

NVIDIA:
1) Right-click on your desktop
2) Click "Nvidia Control Panel"
3) Click "Manage 3D Settings"
4) Select the profile for Payday 2
5) Look for "Anti Aliasing - Mode" and set it to "Application-controlled"

If this doesn't work, check if your Gpu meets the minimum system requirements.

Reporting Issues

If you still have issues with the game it's critical you give some basic information. The devs need information to solve problems so please post

1) Operating System
2) CPU type
3) Video card
4) A detailed description of the problem

A dev needs to reproduce your issue so 'does not work' is not really helpful. ANy information like what messages pop up, event viewer logs, debug logs, etc are things that will be helpful. And yes you need to post your system specs. Otherwise they cant correlate any possible hardware or software conflicts.

The disconnecting issues are still not fixed, and there is still no official word on it. Maybe some help for the thousands of payday2 users?
CocaBird Jun 21, 2014 @ 9:13am
I do not know if this is the right place to post this but it is a start. When ever I am in a game doing a heist the game can randomly crash and everything freezes but the weird thing is the music is still playing but nothing else will work. I have disabled the overlay and am not in the client beta but this still happens. When I switched the resolution to 1600x900 it seemed to reduce the crashes but they still happen. I am not running @ that high settings but its still crashes. I am on a windows 8 Toshiba laptop and I hope someone can help me with this issue. It's a great game otherwise!

  • Texture - medium (tried with all textures)
  • Animation - medium
  • Resolution - 1280 x 768 (Tried with other resolutions, no luck)

  • Reinstalled payday
  • Reinstalled graphic drivers

@Jigglyslime
I am not sure if the ATI Radeon X1950 XTX meets the minimum requirements to run Payday 2. I think you need a card which supports Shader model 4.0 but I could be wrong. Remember that the card is about 7 years old.
But you can try updating DirectX to version 9.0c you can find it here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34429

I searched the forum and saw at least one user say that they thought the game had surround sound in the past and that perhaps an update broke it. Surround sound is nice, please fix it.

Iirc Payday 2 only uses two dedicated audio channels, meaning there is no true surround sound, only emulated. So there is a big chance the problem is related to your audio drivers/device settings.

Ive tried every trouble shooting method I can think of such as disableing steam overlay, updating drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling, verifying game files, disableing my firewall, running as admin, etc.
my specs are as follows;
Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 250 3.00GHz
Gpu: GeForce GTX 550 TI
RAM: 4.00GB
OS: Windows 7 HP

Something you might want to add reguarding steam overlay:

If the Steam Overlay crashes as soon as you open it try this:

Remove/un-favourite all of your Payday 2 guides.

This seemed to fix my problem with the steam overlay, give it ago.
