Lean to Peek is bad.
I noticed something 'broken' with the lean/peek system in this game. It seems as though the enemy AI is more sensitive to detecting your location when you use the lean function to peek around corners rathern than just crouch walking or regular walking slightly outside edges of boxes and walls.

I tried this with all the difficulty settings. I don't get detected if I just look outside of corners normally. When I use the lean function, the enemies notice me more often and quicker. I could stare the enemy synthetics and the alien in the face for hours just standing normally in the edge of corners. That's dumb. Great game... but that's really dumb that it does that.

Considering the Alien has hightened senses, its no surprise it sees you, use that tracker.

What he said made sense though. I just started playing and there was the first human encounter situation and I was behind a wall, so I decided to peek over the top of wall to check where they were moving, an NPC literally said, "I DON'T THINK WE'RE ALONE", turns around 180 and headshots me across the level while I'm supposed to be barely peeking over the wall with just my eyes.

If you just started playing....I believe that NPC is going to notice you no matter what you do. The lean to peak is fine and is nowhere near broken.

Yeah I had no problems with it either. Then again I used it very quickly, pulling my head back and made more use of the tracker.
The first encounter they are going to see you instantly.

That's exactly the issue though. I went through the entire game on hard without being noticed by any enemy by not using the lean to peek, staring the enemy straight in the face while only partially behind cover. It's only when I used lean to peek that they detect me. And I have to disagree with the first encounter. I dont know what people are saying that they see you instantly. I didn't have that experience.

I get what you guys are saying, but in real life, if you were to poke you head around a corner and someone is looking that direction they probably will notice you.

Indeed, but peeking in the game seems to attract a lot of attention.
I've also experienced that peeking makes enemies spot you faster than walking around in the middle of a room. And that goes for all the enemy types, Alien, human and androids all get hak eyes when you're peeking, and seem to walk around with blindfolds when you're out in the open.

Not that walking in the open is adviseable, you're still going to get spotted.
But peeking in-game is basically like waving a huge neon sign saying "Im right here!" around the cover you're behind.

peeking makes you look a lot guiltier than just sitting there. And we all know Aliens and Androids have intense senses of justice and seek out the guilty. :|

you peeked? all I want to do is dig a hole and hide, screw peeking.

Peeking does seem utterly useless in this game. I had the same experience as you with my first human encounter, and also can't understand why people are saying you get spotted instantly? I just did a regular walk around the edge of the room to the generator controls with no issue.

I only eventually got spotted as I went through the vents and stood next to the window where (the girl I think?) was stationed. I thought I was screwed, but she just tried to shoot at the window and I easily escaped by running to the edge of the big room again.

I finished the game on Hard, and now playing on new Nightmare difficulty. I just want to add my opinion that leaning works perfectly! I peak at the Alien and working Joes all the time, I have never been detected while doing this. Lean is not just convenient it is also necessary especially on Nightmare level. Just make sure you peek briefly and go back to cover. You can keep doing this numerous times in each encounter. As for humans, it works for them too, but some are scripted to fire at you as soon as you enter their area.
