Dark Messiah of Might & Magic Single Player

Game still broken...time to start looking for alternatives
Well it's been...I've lost track, but seems like a couple years this game has been broken. I think it's time we start looking for unofficial alternatives to get the game running. I'm not normally one for using a crack to fix such problems, but I have run into games in the past where a simple crack would fix such problems. It might be deeper than that & a crack won't fix it, but it's obviously that we can't rely on Ubisoft to fix this problem themselves when it's been this long without a fix already...

And although I regret having to say it, I think Steam should probably remove this game from the Steam store. Unless they like dealing with people continuously having to request refunds for defective software...

Game runs absolutely fine, so you have no valid reason to post what you posted.
You should have asked for help to get it running on your (crappy?) PC.
Instead now, trolling and crack discussion should get you banned.

@unbornchild,
  • Reported your comment for trolling.
  • Saying my PC is crappy is completely off basis, I just did a near full rebuild which cost around $1500. I'm going to block you because of the trolling, so I'm going to post my specs here so people can see that my system is not the problem. If anything, it would be the OS; I never had these problems on XP, but it's near impossible to get to run on Windows 7 Ultimate.
  • This is not a discussion about piracy, so again your comment is misguided. It is a discussion about searching for a fix that Ubisoft has not been able to provide over an extended period of time.

I found a solution for "mm.exe crash", which worked for me. Here it is.
Cut, not copy a bink32.dll from "Dark Messiah" directory (it's in "bin" folder), place it to "Windows/system32" directory. Tip "Yes" to overwrite request. When copy bink32.dll from "Windows/system32" directory and place it to "bin" folder in your "Dark Messiah" directory. Yes, it sounds strange, but it worked. Hope it'll help someone.

Well that actually makes sense. Newer versions of Bink codecs made for newer OS may cause the game to crash during the opening video. Although my problem is not a crash, it just don't start; just sits resident in the background never showing the game. I will have to give this a shot when I get a chance, although I'll be backing up the original just in case to make sure I don't break other games in the process of fixing this one.

Well, I didn't have any bink32.dll in system32 before (instantly!), and other games worked fine.
Special check just for you: they work AFTER placing dll in system32 folder too. So nothing was breaked )

As a fair reminder: discussions of cracks and piracy are not allowed here. Unofficial patches that do not circumvent any security feature of the game are ok, though.

Cracks aren't illigal, technically piracy isn't either, if you own a copy of it.

On 3 different computers I've had the exact same problem. I can boot the game up, and the framerate will slowly get worse and worse as I play the game, 15 min in and it's gone from a smooth 60+ to 10 or below. When I restart the game the issue resets, and the framerate is fine till it degrades again. All the PCs I've tried it on were way above the recomended specs.

Edit: I also periodically get random crashes.

I disagree; I've hit numerous bugs like being sucked below the level after I jumped to cut down a body hanging on a rope, entirely white-blueish screen due to world reflections being buggy, dying with 1 HP, applying heal *after* death causing me to die with 10 HP, ...

Certainly, I could go on here. Personally, I find it inacceptable for a company to leave a product in such a shape, but I dare to question that applying some unofficial patch will resolve any bugs of the game.

I've had all those bugs. I've fallen through maps about 4 times.

It's not a question of illegality, it's the question of the strict community rules on this. Technically according to the FAQ and rules there, even a discussion like this could lead to a steam community unreversable permaban if a moderator had a bad day ;)
