This is not a bad game that has aged poorly.

The combat system is still fun and fairly diverse thanks to environmental physics, a variety of attack types, and weapons. However, the almost complete lack of enemy reaction to weapon hits greatly reduces the sense of impact. As a result, all melee combat boils down to spamming kicks and heavy attacks. This can still be fun, but it’s obvious that this is not what the developers intended.

All the other tools the game provides are much less effective. Stealth barely works: enemies constantly spot you, and due to the corridor-like level design, there’s no way to обход them. There are many spells, but most of them are useless, and the ones that do make sense consume too much mana and are unlocked quite late. Therefore, playing as a mage feels quite painful.

The levels are fairly linear and, worst of all, quite repetitive and very dark. Most of the game takes place in catacombs and dungeons you will constantly be spamming the clairvoyance ability.

This was an early game by Arkane Studios, and it’s obvious that many of its elements were not yet fully polished. However, its contribution is quite important, as it ultimately led to the creation of Dishonored and other great immersive sims by the studio.
