First capture was an outsider, but no shard research available

I've been trying new ways to play lately, and I've run into a new research path situation. I've got an Outsider shard but no option to research it. I have to assume that I need to complete one of the autopsies first? That would seem to make the most sense.

Yep - capturing an outsider is part of the main quest. It is not possible to make an autopsy on it - you'll b asked to capture one of them and this unlock the following quest events - but you need to capture another alien before (any of them will do).

Have you built an Alien Containment Facility first? It could be something as simple as that since its completely possible to build arc throwers before the ACF.

You don't need the ACF for an Outsider capture - it turns into a crystal after it "dies".

You DO need an ACF to interrogate your first alien, which opens up the Outsider Shard research. So yes my statement stands.
