Same problem here.

You likely have CPU with 10 cores+

You can download a custom DLL which worked for many people in DS 1,2,3.

Or you can try set CPU affinity so less than 10 cores are used, likely setting it to 2-4 cores is the best.

And of course cap fps via GPU control panel. to 60-150 to prevent other issues.

DLL worked for many people even for DS 1 but for some it causes flickering shadows.

I can't get the game to launch either - I HAD had it up and running as recently as 2019 - and this is the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ PC. But I have reinstalled and verified and tried creating a settings file and running in compatibility mode and as an admin - NOTHING works at all.
Please - if anyone can help . . . I know my PC can't run the newer iteration of the game. My PC is decently specced with an
i7-6700k CPU,
GTX 1080,
32 GB RAM...
so, it is about 5 years old, but still a beefy machine for most except the most current batch of games. AND I RAN Dead Space 2008 before
Help - please

Buy second ssd. Install Pop!_OS, Ubuntu and, or Linux Mint etc and dualboot.

Valve has marked this game as VERIFIED so it runs out of the box (Steam Deck) and generally on popular Linux distros.
Windows has become something else than a good platform to run even Windows games.

Linux is free and you can still keep Windows because there are still many games with Anti Cheat not enabled on Linux. So some games unable to play.

(This is not a hardware issue. Steam Deck runs Dead Space close to 4K 60fps at 15W....)

OK. After trying to get Dead Space 2008 to farkin' work on my new rig, I tried using
the dxwrapper from your link and it worked... :D ... for Dead Space 2 only. Didn't work for Dead Space 1...so I looked for more info on the net. Found a reddit post w/ a link to download the dxwrapper.ini and edit a part in there, particularly "SingleProcAffinity" and state how many cores you want to use (2-4 like you said or even 10 or less if you want) and that finally friggin' worked. Hallelujah. So it's definitely a multi-core cpu problem re: Dead Space 1 w/ newer cpu's etc.

I haven't tried further fixes from the user who suggested it but for now it works.

Fix was suggested by user __0xi, link below if you want to try it out for yourself:

N-Joy!

Glad to hear that.

Fun fact:This 10 CPU core issue was first reported to EA customer service back in 2016 almost SEVEN years ago.

Seven years ago huh...shockin' :S

I had this same problem on the Steam Deck… it puzzled me because the game is supposedly Verified on the Steam Deck. I tried a ton of different CPU setting with no luck. Finally I went to the SteamOS settings menu prior to launching the game. Properties>General: shut off “Desktop Game Theatre” and then set the launch option as: “Play Dead Space (2008)”

had the same issue, turned off the overlay and it started working again. Maybe give that a try?

Thank goodness there is a solution to play original game :)
I have no interest in the reboot version.

I am exactly experiencing "flickering shadows" issue, any solution found?

You can try lowering shadow settings but for some people it does not solve the flickering issue.

Maybe there are other custom DLLs too on the internet not sure.

You can try CPU lasso and set affinity to 2-4 cores and then it might work and do not need DLL file.
