Please buy this one instead of the absolute disgrace that is the "remake."

Story has more twists than a twizzler

A great horror game through and through. The gameplay is fun though you will need some community fixes to make it really work, the horror is actually terrifying, the story is amazing, and the atmosphere and world-building is great. Overall I'll recommend this game to anyone who is into horror games and science fiction.

I go between this and the remake all the time. Love both games equally, but I love how aggressive and fast the necromorphs are in the orignal.

Even if the game is predictable after a few playthroughs, it's still fun to go back through and practice speed runs with different weapons. Impossible mode is a blast, especially when playing '1 hit = death' rule and only using lv 1 armor with minimal supply storage.

Overall 2008 is my favorite game of all time. Ever since I saw the cover art on the game informer magazine before release,
I knew this game was going to be amazing.

Did one playthrough on lowest difficulty. Got all logs, weapons, armor available.

The game's pacing is stellar. There's always something new around each corner, and while the medium relies heavily on jumpscares to foster fear, there's a good amount of creeping horror in place too. Once the game has established jumpscares as a model for fear, you almost find yourself filled with fear simply over the anticipation of them. Once you get near the end of the game this changes a bit, as some things become more predictable with time.

The story is good, it's very interesting to see the back-and-forth between Hammond and Rebecca, and how Rebecca masterfully convinces you Hammond was the problem . It's evident the game was heavily inspired by Alien in its design and story, but the nods and aspects related are not too in-your-face. I wouldn't call it unpredictable, having seen a lot of sci-fi stories to date, but it certainly was consistently interesting to see how the game progressed.

The UI suffers and thrives through different aspects. The game never tries to slot you into a menu unless you can see Isaac in it, which really helps with the immersion. Elements like ammo counters or health bars, Stasis meters, etc. all are represented clearly to the player. The game does suffer some in the standard menu sections, where navigation is sometimes, but not always, requiring the arrow keys. This allows you to move while in menu, but becomes problematic in some cases having to swap between the two methods.

Puzzles and minigames were fun and helped break up the tone and pacing nicely. The real puzzles however, are presented in the combat. Dead Space, being a horror game, has a heavy focus on non-traditional shooter combat. This is to increase immersion of being a spaceship technician, but also to make you feel weaker against the enemy. Each of the weapons serve one or two unique functions in the sandbox, and you can hold up to four at a time. Ammo is semi-plentiful and you can always buy more at a shop. This is of course reliant on your accuracy, as not hitting critical cutting points properly will often result in more ammo spent on enemies. This game *nails* visceral. There are some problems, from my personal point of view. I tried all of the weapons, but almost immediately settled for the Plasma Cutter (general use), the Pulse Rifle (general use, midrange), the Flamethrower (for those pesky small ones), and the Contact Cannon (boss battles). With a reminder that I was playing on easy, I only felt like I ever really needed the Plasma Cutter for most engagements. This changes when I get low on ammo for it, but this never really felt common.

The game is at its best when you have to experience, fast, on-the-fly, frantic combat. Fear is the main motivator to play this game. This doesn't lend itself to thought-out engagements. There are a lot of extra mechanics that I felt I never really used because the threat was just so present. For instance, throwing saw blades, using stasis, throwing enemy parts at other enemies. All of these are unique mechanics, but due to the rather clunky nature of how Isaac operates it always felt difficult to interact with these elements without a high chance for failure. Why try anything else when the Plasma Cutter does the job fine?

The biggest contributor to this is the game's age. Aiming is extremely slippery, there seems to be some amount of mouse deceleration built-in. Swapping weapons while sprinting cancels the sprint. Reloading is only consistent when aiming down sights. Picking up physics items takes some time and can be hard to line up mid combat, much more so than simply firing a weapon.

I feel like if I played it again I might gain more appreciation for the sandbox, try new strategies. But the New Game Plus mode doesn't add anything different to the encounter set, and the draw of potentially new but mediocre weapons isn't enough to make me want to sit through the cutscenes again. Once I had my core engagement ranges down, it was too scary or committed to swap from them. Trusty weaponry and practiced methods win out when all engagements are meant to be reactionary. This is likely something intrinsic to the genre, but it does feel like it limits the gameplay heavily by discouraging experimentation.

Game requires a lot of tweaking to get working and feel right to play. Allow me to explain:

When I first attempted to boot the game, it would crash on boot. The fix for that was that I had to limit my CPU cores to 10 or less in MSCONFIG>boot>advanced options.

Then, there is the control issues. Apparently the controls are tied to your FPS somehow, so there are many different solutions that all kind of overlap with each other. What I did was disable the in game vsync, enable it in the NVIDA control panel and cap the FPS to 120. My in game resolution is 1080p 120fps. This seems to keep things running stable.

Now you have two options, M+KB or Controller:
If you want to do M+KB then you have to download a .dll mouse fix from the internet and put that file into your game's folder to make that work. However if you use that, then it disables your controller.

If you would like to use a controller, it has to be an xbox 360 controller or a DS4 controller with DS4 windows on. Even then the aiming still has HUGE dead zones and awful aim acceleration, so the best fix for that is to go to the steam input community layouts and use the most played config labeled "Dead zone fix" EVEN THEN I still had to increase the right stick sensitivity to 300 in the steam input menu and tweak the in game mouse sensitivity to get the aiming and camera feeling just right.

If you keep all that in mind, it's still Dead Space one of the greatest games of all time. It is a shame that the PC version of the game is that finicky, but it is possible to get working. If all of that sounds like too much trouble, don't buy this version. Hopefully my review will help some of you get it working too. I like Issac as a mostly silent protagonist and this game still holds up graphically after all these years.
