Why do I need to do outposts ?
Hi Guys, what am I missing ? I am a casual quester and love to survey planets. While doing that I harvest almost everything that comes in my way and it seems to me I have everything I could possibly need for crafting. What is the purpose for building outposts ? Could you please point me in the right directions ?
Thanks .
On a side note....I love the game, having lots of fun. Thanks.

You can make a resource hub that automatically collects and store resources for crafting upgrades, meds and food, and also make money with items crafted from raw resources.

There are other ways to get resources obviously, this one is just more convenient if you put the effort. Dont recommebd if you dont like base building in games

No real purpose, but crafting helps with XP. You will need at least 1 skill point in Outpost Engineering, Outpost Management, Planetary Habitation, Research Methods,
Botany and Zoology, to get anything out of it crafting wise. This is my take on it, others may have a different view. PS, I enjoy outpost building.

Edit: or do what @Seseron does. Nothing set in stone in this regard.

Other than collecting resources in bulk automatically, the main appeal for outposts for me would be just creating cool cozy bases and displaying things I've looted along the way.

It's fun. Or if you don't like it, ignore it.
Also, if you're going to build a ship, the ship-builder in your outpost is better than to build it somewhere else (better access to parts).
You might also need somewhere to store all your stuff if you're into modding your weaponry and gear.
But, you don't really neeeeeed an outpost.

I roleplayed an industrialist, focusing on staryard invoices, supply chains, and manufacturing.

That latter is me. Waiting for kinggath to get on Sim Outposts. Or, really, just Outpost plans where I can drop down, say, a hydroponics farm, or a mineral mining factory, fully decorated and good to go. Or, even better, plop down a residential hab, and let your workers build the rest, intelligently, to harvest whatever organic or inorganic resources are nearby, a la Sim Settlements.

Why? Because its fun.

I enjoy sitting back and watching my busy transportation network do its thing.

There's a learning curve to make all these moving parts work correctly, but you'll have the satisfaction of being in the elite ranks of SF players that figured out the outpost system.

There's a landing platform structure you can build with a terminal that lets your modify your ships and it has most of the ship parts available. Your outpost can be the best spot for shipbuilding.

Another function of outposts is storing your loot. Lots of storage containers can be built.

Another function of outposts is if you want to you can store companions there.

Then of course there's resource generation.

When you have all the relics you can build the amilary (I don't know how to spell that) and Starborn will keep attacking. I haven't done this but I assume it's a good way to get xp.

When you've done pretty much everything else, planning and constructing a 24-outpost cargo network is a new challenge that is rewarding simply because you make it so. It is not something to be approached lightly, and requires serious skill points into the relevant categories, but if you like building stuff (I started with ships and caught the bug bad lol) it can be very absorbing and beats repeating all-too-familiar quests over and over. Every outpost can be different, they can be great for role playing (I had a ski resort last NG+), and they need be only as complex as you feel comfortable with.

I adore building settlements and camps in the Fallout games yet I have asked myself this same question. Basically they are designed for you to land on a planet, build a quick temporary base of operations for mining and manufacturing, go explore and pack it all up when you leave.

I tend to find maybe a single personal base home is all I normally tend to worry about building.

Otherwise it's basically there to set up large supply chain to farm XP

Farming xp doesnt require a large supply chain, you just need 2 resources and a bunch of storage.

Supply chains are great to provide a lot of different resources so you can just go to your base and craft upgrades for all your new guns (some require likd 10 or more different resources to be fully modded), restock on meds and food/drinks. Much more fun that travelling to merchants and resetting their inventory by waiting.

You don't need to do outposts if you don't find it fun.

I would recommend doing at least one outpost so you can put the large landing pad on it. Which lets you use the shipbuilder with a larger selection of ship options on it than many spots.

I find that handy, even if I find outposts underwhelming overall.

I've found some magazines at random outposts which suggest they aren't in fixed locations this time, or maybe there's a lot of duplicates...

You can get duplicates of magazines, so they can appear in random outposts. But you only get the benefit once for each issue.

But he was asking about player created outposts, not random ones.
