4) MODDING THE GAME

THE GOLDEN RULE OF MODDING

"No matter how good a mod may look or sound, no matter how much you may really want a mod, if the mod does not work as it should, causes issues in your game, or even seems to have the potential to cause issues, dump the mod. A game that does not work is no game at all." - smr1957

Addendum to the above:

"Until the release of the Starfield Creation Kit, though tempting, modding is not recommended and not supported, as there is too much unknown as to how the game works under the hood, and there may be unforeseen consequences. Remember, it is better to play a game unmodded, then to curse at a modded game that does not work." - smr1957

And, with the advent of Collections on Nexus, a new corollary to that:
"No matter how good a collection may look or sound, if it has a poor success rate, don't use it - and if it doesn't work, or causes issues, dump it." - smr1957

ADVANCED TROUBLESHOOTING - CRASHING/FREEZING ON PC - STARFIELD -

IF ON STEAM AND PLAY BUTTON IS GREYED OUT, RESTART STEAM

1 - Make sure that your machine meets the minimum requirements necessary to run the game. This is the most basic thing, and though seemingly obvious, and something that an individual should do before they place an order for ANY game, it is occasionally overlooked. If your system does not meet the minimum specs, unless you intend to upgrade anytime soon, you are better off refunding the game - as there is nothing that can realistically be done.

2 - Set the game to run as administrator

3 - Try the classic IT fix. Exit the game. Exit Steam (just don't close Steam but completely exit it. To do so, in the top left corner of your screen, click on Steam (it is in small print and just above the arrows and STORE). From the dropdown menu that appears, click on Exit. Once Steam has shut down, shut down your PC/Laptop, wait a minute or two, and then reboot. Once your machine is running, launch Steam and then launch the game.

4 - Validate/Verify the game - doing this will ensure that all the files are as they should be - it is sometimes the case that there may have been an issue with the download or installation causing a file(s) to go missing or become corrupted. Provided that your PC meets the minimum requirements, this is one of the first steps that should be taken, and solves many, if not most, issues.
NOTE: 1 file will always fail to validate; this is the file governing your graphics card, and as such, it will be acquired when you launch the game.

5 - Check that your antivirus is not blocking the game. Antiviruses often do this - if so, the game needs to be added to the list of programs that your antivirus should not block

6 - If you are on a PC/Laptop and running into issues where you are unable to save games, see your previous saves, launch the game past the main menu, or having trouble with your .INI files not being updated, make sure that Microsoft's One Drive is disabled. See:
How to fix One Drive Issues

7 - If all else fails, start a thread in the forum, detailing all the steps you have taken. Hopefully, someone will have the answers or some ideas, and will be able to help.

The above are just the most basic and general steps that apply to just about any game. Once information becomes available, it will be expanded

Suggestion. Ad "Starfield" or something to topic. We have a bunch of similarly named threads. We might end up replying to wrong thread.

For those wishing to get a very general idea of how I envision this topic to eventually look and be set up, you can take a look at its sister topic in the Skyrim Special Edition forum:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/489830/discussions/0/2828702372997628701/

Obviously, sections regarding modding, tools, etc. cannot be added until the capability to mod the game has been achieved; and a section on troubleshooting will await some time of people actually playing the game so as to determine what needs troubleshooting and what the solutions are. Basically, the setup is pretty self-explanatory. But, I will be taking it slow, as it is better to wait until there is definitive and reliable information, then rush and post information that may be potentially incorrect or not quite accurate. And, needless to say, all help is appreciated!

Yep. Even experienced users can sometimes get trapped.

They are most efficient, when working together. So just in general rule, let's mark few things down again, for everyone.

- You CAN NOT get scammed, when sticking with Steam trading system. Period. If you got scammed in trade, you derived from system. Stick with the system.

- If trade is not direct, then it is indirect and can be intercepted. Only accept direct trade within Steam's own system.

- Steam support will never ask your details in chat, forum, e-mail or any other means of messaging. Let's be clear: they simply do not need to ask your information. They already see your user ID and that is all they need to get exactly every piece of information they require!

- Guy popping in to chat as "Steam staff member" is a scammer, supporting the scammer that initialized the con. Tell them to go play with Barbie dolls, or what ever.

- The guy asking you to file information outside of Steam (on a site that might look legit) is as scammer. Once again, Steam does not need your information. You have already filed it all for them under Account settings.

- If you need to redo some settings, use Steam client and file them under your Account settings. Filing them anywhere else means that they are going to wrong hands.

- Someone babbling about warnings, trade scams, accidental reports (etc.) on Discord or other platforms is a scammer.

Steam moderator will never approach you in Steam chat to ask ANY account information. What ever the person says, he is trying to con you to give out critical information.

Your community messages can be found from every hub discussion page. That is where you can see, if someone from Steam staff has actually contacted you.

And they still shouldn't have any business to ask about your account information, because Steam support already has the information you have typed under your Steam Account details.

GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING section

For now, the General Troubleshooting section just lists the very most basic things. Once the game has been released and more information becomes availabe, it will be expanded, as needed.

Just a general request - when making posts about game features or other information, please provide a citation and a link to the specific Bethesda statement regarding your post (and if it is a video, please provide a timestamp to the location in the vid where the discussed item is featured). This will allow others to verify the accuracy and help to avoid speculation being presented as fact.

It is fun to speculate about the game, and people should do so and enjoy it, but it should be clearly stated that that is all it is - a guess and a speculation meant for discussion, and not be presented as a statement of fact.
