It is somewhat similar. In my opinion, Outer Worlds was a bit too small for a space game, and a bit too short for a supposed "open world" RPG. I liked it, but it's more of a one and done, whereas Starfield is more akin to Skyrim or Fallout in scope, experience, and play time.

I think they're pretty different feeling experiences, personally. Just like FO4 and TES don't feel like The Outer Worlds to me (and not just because they aren't in space.)

For me the closest comparison, while Starfield departs from them in many ways, remains Skyrim and FO4. Just:

  • In space
  • With less Radiant AI
  • With more discrete maps separated by loads (hence the "loading screens" critique you may have heard, because each map is Skyrim sized or larger, and the game isn't seamless, so you're loading between zones when travelling between planetary maps and between surfaces and space.)
  • With more repetition due to POI placement being procedural and sheer scale (thousands of planets, only a fraction of which aren't barren, and even those that aren't only have limited settlements.)
  • With shipbuilding.

Go into it expecting that, with all the requisite jank and other things you're familiar with from other Bethesda games, and you have a pretty reasonable expectation of what the game is like. If that sounds enjoyable, you might like it. I do. If not, you might not. Check out some gameplay and filter it through the lens of your own tastes.

Whenever a game from a studio comes out, people make all sorts of comparisons, but generally speaking, and I think that's the case here, the best comparison remains a given studio's previous game(s.)

It's like with Cyberpunk 2077, you had people expecting (and making comparisons to) everything from GTA to TES to Shenmue and... surprise surprise... its closest comparison, while it does also share elements with GTA I suppose being a big open city game... was TW3. The game was just TW3 if it was first person, had larger crowds, cars instead of horses, poilice instead of guards, scanner instead of Witcher sense, hacking instead of magic, character creation, and guns instead of just swords and spells. And in a city.

Its general thrust and design philosophy still felt like (shock!) a CDPR game, ultimately. Even the inventory menu design was recognizably similar in its layout.

This is a Bethesda game. So, similarly, it feels and plays like a Bethesda game.

Talking about the game positively is difficult these days. Good work.

Fortunately, the vending machines in Starfield don't blare obnoxious jingles... :HappyMoonman:

While OW is pretty linear, limited enemies which do respawn after a long while, Starfield does have a main questline and several faction storylines plus dozens of side missions..,
...it also can enjoyed completely unguided. Also, OW didn't have spaceship combat, IIRC.

Absolutely not. If you love The Outer Worlds don’t even think about touching Starfield. Don’t fall for the shills trying to sell you on it it’s nowhere near the game they’re pretending it is. Save your time, money, and sanity.

I probably put over 400 hours into TOW Spacer's Choice Edition over a couple of playthroughs while i was waiting for Starfield to launch. I liked it but part of the reason i stuck with TOW so long was a friend and I built our load orders together and then played it while chatting in Steam chat.

Starfield is hands down a better game imo I think Suicidal_godot about summed it up:

Outer Worlds was developed by creators of the original Fallout (1 & 2) while Starfield was developed by creators of the newer Fallout (3 & 4.) If you enjoyed all of those, there's a good chance you'd like Starfield.

But seriously watch some gameplay footage or try it on game pass, because major AAA games are expensive these days and Steam's 2 hour refund window isn't really enough time.

No, Fallout 1 was Interplay. Fallout 2 was Black Isle. Fallout New Vegas was Obsidian, who did The Outer Worlds.

Two questions:

1. Do you like Fallout 4/Skyrim?
2. Do you like No Man's Sky?

If you answered both with yes, then chances are high you will also like Starfield. If you don't like one or the other, then probably not.

I found starfield more enjoyable than TOW myself, although I did like the quirky humor of TOW. Starfield sells the virtual universe better, and is less whacky. Starfield is... kinda 80's future vibe, like Outland (the film w. sean connery), like fallout has the 50's-60's vibe. However, it's less of a parody of it; it has less humor than you're used to from Fallout.

I liked playing The Outer Worlds but Starfield does require mods and i use SFSE for just the ship building and the rest of the mods (I use) makes Starfield easier to play.

I prefer Starfield, even though OW was good too, Starfield is considerably larger, with more mechanics & depth. Dont worry about what people complain, see for yourself, one glaring example is "loading screens" complaint, but as you play you'll become extremely thankful for those because most of the time they're shortcuts as you fast travel, this game is so HUGE you actually need those, & will be thankful for them,

The game is on sale right now too, so its a great time to snag it up, there are more DLC & updates to come, and well over 10,000 mods already when you consider all mod places, Nexus having the most, of course.
