Starfield current state and future?
Hello. I've been away from this game for a long time (haven't even played Shattered Space.)

1. I'm curious what is the state of the game currently (almost February 2025)?

2. When was the last update and what did it add?

3. Do we know anything about the next update? What will it add?

4. Is there any road map for the future? Will there be more DLCs after Shattered Space and what is known about them?

Thank you.

Starfield has pretty much been abandoned at this point. The last real update was ages ago and Bethesda’s been radio silent ever since. Theres still one more DLC coming but that’s going to flop just like the first one.

The future of Starfield is just watching Bethesda quietly move on while the remaining fans pretend everything’s fine.
You can see the game's update history here: https://bethesda.net/en/game/starfield/news

Nothing is known about future updates at this time, and there is no public roadmap. The previous roadmap included a loose schedule for updates "roughly every six weeks," and plans to implement several specific features, all of which were implemented over the course of the game's first year of life.

Following the major September 30th 2024 update and the release of Shattered Space, they announced they were relaxing the update cadence and would no longer be aiming for the "roughly every six weeks" timing.

The only other thing known is that they had at least one other expansion planned (but it has not been officially confirmed or announced - the planning of it was merely mentioned,) and that they have aspirations to release one such expansion each year. Whether that actually happens still or not remains to be seen.

The most recent patch was in November.

1. It runs fine, is eminently playable, and has very, very few bugs.
2. Last update was a patch that mostly addressed the recently released DLC issues.
3. Nope.
4. No, and no company is obligated to provide you with a business plan. According to the last interview with Todd, there are planned periodic content releases, at least one per year. We don't really know anything about the next expansion. The only thing we know is that BGS trademarked "Starborn".

There are also new Creations, both paid and free, that release frequently.

Or you can do like some people and just hang out dooming and glooming because it didn't release with 1000's of mods like Skyrim did.......wait no...it took years for Skyrim to get those 1000s of mods and even more for them to be the refined version they are today.

Well you can always just hang out then.

Its been less than a year since the CK released (I think around may 2024). Its been 4 months since the last DLC (shattered Storm Oct 2024). The last update was November 2024 (Along with some 3 free Creations (Thanksgiving Quest, Doom POI and Weapoin/armor, and a new Type of buggy).

1) Unlikely to have a crash to desktop. You'll still find quest and model physics bugs at times. The main issue that still exists is that the save can take many minutes to load as you progress in the save.

2) Shattered Space patch I would assume. Probably fixed some game breaking stuff, but didn't so anything beyond that as most of the patches for Starfield have been real low effort by the dev team (especially when compared to Cyberpunk).

3) Nope, probably at least 1 more DLC, but the game may be abandoned.

4) Nope, Bethesda is been quiet.

A year after Skyrim's release I was using maybe one or two mods, that's about it. Current mod count in SF is close to 50 with Creations and Nexus mods.
sf's future is looking like the dollar bin special. game doesn't get half the updates we see with other games because only a few thousand left are playing.

It's not a live service and/or mp game that needs to keep feeding the fish to get them hooked on in-apps. Kind of sad that you equate that with something "better" while denigrating a company NOT playing that bait and switch game. Maybe one day NMS will get some actual content instead of more of the same old baubles and you'll fell better.
Starfield peak players is 331K, current players is 7K players and has been so for a while. The DLC only pushed the players up to 22K. The DLC only recovered to 7% of the launch players and only 2.1% of the launch player numbers are playing currently (not necessarily the same people).

Cyberpunk peak is 1054K , DLC pushed players to 275K, current is about 60K-70K. The DLC recovered 26% of peak and 6% of the peak are currently playing. All of these numbers are 3x Starfield for retention/returning/new players.

There are currently more people playing Fallout 4 than Starfield.

so if its not a live service game you answered the op's question. no more patches/updates for sf or future dlc's.

It's 'future' is a "code altering" update and possibly being offered on PlayStation.

So instead of being so bright to wear sunglasses at night, it's so dim you need to turn on a grow lamp just to see your hand in front of your face.

Hello. I've been away from this game for a long time (haven't even played Shattered Space.)

Welcome back! You've come at a pretty good time, the game has improved in a number of ways. Here's a list of things you can look forward to!

  1. The REV-8, an all-terrain vehicle was added, and it's amazing!
  2. There's some free Creations Store content added that's pretty enjoyable, a new Deimog all-terrain vehicle, a Doom Crossover mission (with new loot), new Blackout Weapon Skins, and a few new Story Missions [Bethesda Content].
  3. Shattered Space is actually quite interesting, I like it! It doesn't address any of Starfield's core issues, if that's what you were hoping for, but it is extremely well made! If you like Starfield, you'll like Shattered Space DLC!
  4. There's been some adjustments with NPCs, changing their Weapons, Clothing and Behaviors (Elite NPCs mostly).
  5. You can now customize the interior of your Ships with some of the same items you could when building an Outpost. It's not nearly as robust, but it's good for certain gameplay enhancements, like Storage, Organization, Beds, Food/ Meds etc.

Most of the major gameplay bugs were squashed, as far as I'm aware. I do recommend staying away from Nexus Mods for now (and 'Engine Fixes'/ Unofficial Patches), unless you're sure about certain Mods. Many of them are causing terrible issues, and the blame is being thrown at Bethesda. If you wanna Mod the game, get things from the Creations Store instead!

2. When was the last update and what did it add?

It's sorta recent, but hard to say exactly, because Bethesda has been secretly updating the game, without adding the changes they've been making in any of the patch notes. For example, I've come across [2] new Enemy Base location-types in the Vanilla game and have more customization of NPC Companions that didn't exist before.

It's tough to know what was a bug fix and what was a newer addition?

3. Do we know anything about the next update? What will it add?

Rumors have been going around that the next DLC after Shattered Space will be titled "Starborn". I can only assume that everything having to do with 'that' part of the story-line will get some kind of overhaul, and some newer additions to Starborn powers and abilities. There is a Mod that makes Starborn encounters more interesting, like being the Leader of "Criminal Groups", and sometimes hiding in-plain-sight as a normal NPC.

It's not confirmed if we'll see anything like this, but if it's a possibility, that's certainly an update I'm looking forward to!

Well, Todd and Company assure us that they have every intention of supporting Starfield for a long time, longer than any other game they have so far, but they've been hush-hush about anything new they're planning outside of DLC. Stuff just kinda 'drops', and you'll find out via YouTube, via Steam Updates or checking out the Creations Store. :steamthis:

Edit: I forgot to mention that some newer gameplay options were added-in too, like removing the "face zoom" when talking to NPC, and the ability to toggle difficulty settings that add or subtract a certain percentage of XP received, like the need to eat or drink, and environmental hazards, etc.
