Fix the I/O
Please make the I/O the same everywhere. Either hold the key down everywhere or use a single key stroke. In Outer Worlds holding the key down for all interactions is the standard. This game has a hodgepodge of I/O commands!!! Did you guy's ever talk to one another??

Huh? To what are you referring?

for some actions, you tap the correct key, for other actions, you hold it down for a few seconds..... I agree, not a good plan.

What makes it worse is the measurement for short vs long press. The game gets confused and doesn't complete the short press or the long press actions far too often. It's always fun to stand up and have to watch the stand up/sit down animation sequences in the middle of combat because you held the key too long trying to switch targets.

KB or Controller? What actions? Looking for specifics here. I have not played on kb+m at all. And, controllers being limited, the press vs. hold is a necessary function. You just have to learn it. I guess I've been playing so many different games for so long that new control schemes don't really bother me.

There ever was a plan behind anything Beth developed, in regards to controls?

It's a side effect of "console first" development. The two short vs long presses that come up the most are E and Tab on the keyboard. You use E to target and switch targets and hold E to get up from the pilots seat. This conflict of a necessary combat key with an out of combat action totally screws with combat when coupled with mishandling of the timings. Sometimes you press a key and release as quickly as possible but it still determined it was a partial hold and does nothing.

Just a quick one: On the ship, press E to lock on to another ship, accept an incoming hail, hail your current targeted ship, etc.... long press makes you stand up.... Sometimes, the game doesn't always 'get' that you are trying to lock on to another target, and you stand up, in the middle of combat.... Really NOT a good idea.

Perhaps clear examples would clarify you point.

The game clearly abused of the keep press commands. Now it's new standard coming from mobiles or consoles, it replaces a confirmation button. But another new standard is never ask any confirmation if there's no persistent damages risked. And as it's just a game, most commands should not request any confirmation.

But Starfield seems have used keep press commands just to allow use one key for two commands, bad idea, and I quoted some design bugs or one. In spaceship when you pilot one, H is to acquire a target, and press H leaves the piloting, but if a target is acquired you can't untarget, H just switch to a next target, and then keep press H doesn't work anymore lol.

So ok I agree dev screwed it up the UI design around keep press key commands, they's better havev follow the new standards around it, or at least have add commdn bind to remove command associated to a keep press to bind it to another key, and even allow defined a command on a key press key at player choice. AC series tried alas the binding quality drop down from Odyssey to Valhalla.

But I don't see the cases where it's so big.

Honestly I don't understand why so many developers are even putting this trash "hold "button" for 5 seconds to do x" in the game. Its wasting time and completely garbage design especially when playing with m+kb. Just let me close the damn menu by clicking tab or esc once and not holding it for 5 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ seconds to close it. wth.

Gotcha, so this isn't about long-press on a controller, but rather kb layouts... as I said, I've not used the kb at all (other than for screenshots). The long press is a necessity on controllers, and should really be used more often, imo, like for the powers, I'd much rather a long press of, say, Y, over simultaneous press of LB+RB.

Now I got you though. I think that's kind of subjective. Yeah, you have 100+ keys, but you also don't want to travel too far either. I haven't checked, is there no way to remap the long press kb keys?

sounds like a console thing due to lack of buttons compared to keyboard

even on keyboard some games just have too much in my opinion

It's not always trash, for example myself I appreciate that stash weapon is just the reload command but with key pressed. Also I quoted some very good cases in Assassin Creed.

But it should be a player choice, but it's not easy to merge it to UI of commands biding.

For keep press to replace a confirmation, yeah it's just crap. The only cases I quoted are:
- Command to acquire a target and stand up to stop pilot. But it's not replacing any confirmation.
- Maps menu with like 4 levels and they only offered a way to escape all with a key press, when I'd prefer just a button or command to close all maps levels. But it's not replacing any confirmation.

So i didn't even quoted the cases with keep key press replaces a confirmation, in various other games I did, but not in starfield.

Being an EDSF and invert mouse (fingertip trackball) player, I'm just glad I have a game in 2023 that allows me to rebind all my keys the way I want like the old days. To many other games releasing with hardcoded I/O to keys (like WASD for UI navigation. Annoying.)

Not exactly all, there are fixed biding related to press key, for example there's a command to stop pilot a ship and you can't choose it a specific binding.

But yeah fixed keys biding are such a curse, even a very few can be very boring.

I stopped buy games even indies without key biding. But then there's still the case of few fixed binding, sometimes it's ok for me, sometimes it's a very annoying nuisance, I need quote I never installed or uninstalled stuff as AutoHotkey, and dev should not expect players use this to save their time and lower their budget.

Some keys are re-mappable, don't know if those specific ones are though, it hasn't bothered me overmuch, only got me killed once...... :) So, I haven't done anything about it yet.
