Use the Steam button + X (Steam + X) to bring up the keyboard.
This is more of a game function. When games don't have that happen, it cannot be listed as "Verified" but will be listed as "Playable". However, devs may not care to update their titles as long as they aren't crashing on the Deck.
I don't really see how having another dedicated button would be that much more convenient than pressing Steam+X?
For what it's worth, it does try to do this, but there are a lot of situations in applications or games that have custom text boxes where it's literally impossible for the OS to know whether you've tapped on a text box or not.
Mostly because I am an old person and trying to remember Steam X along with all the other different combinations to different things gets a bit ridiculous..
Some people have more in life to remember, like chainsaw safety, and don't want to be messing around with memorizing different button combinations.
And putting a simple hole in the back at the most convenient location of the case is an obvious miss..... I shouldn't have to jump through hoops like you did for something so obvious.
This is a terrible, terrible idea. The Deck needs air to live. Without sufficient airflow to cool it (because you've blocked all the vents and powered it on) it will overheat.
I'd hardly consider buying a right-angle USB-C cable to be "jumping through hoops", it's just a thing you can buy for like $7. You do you, though.
Can't you put a reminder of what the shortcut is next to your daily meds or comfy slippers so you don't forget?
To do a moulding change to add a button or shape of a unit is typically a million dollar ordeal. Then you have to do a circuit board revision change, even more money. Then you have to prototype and program and code and beta test, gamma, delta, gold.
I do suspect that they may figure out how to fit some more buttons on the next gen steam deck or there may come along a case that adds some more buttons.
On screen keyboard display for touchscreens are really relegated to kiosks and as an accessibility option for operating systems. pop up keyboards are gaining more mainstream acceptance thanks to adoption of smart phone and tablets out there. However, projection keyboards, may be a better option...
Never charge things while running in an enclosed space unless it is a fire retardant bag like you use for LiPo batteries.
Ah, wonderful. Some validation. Not just me being paranoid then.
Right, but my concern is that while it's charging (Not running, obvs.) the charging IC is heating up. The battery is heating up. Something deep down in my techno-lizard brain tells me that enclosing the device in what amounts to an insulated box during this process probably isn't the best idea.
Not connected to charger, in sleep mode for a few hours: 78.8 F
Connected to the charger outside the case for 30 minutes: 88.7 F
After 30 minutes of playing Ghost Song, a fairly resource-light 2D platformer: 102.6 F
After 30 minutes of playing Final Fantasy XIV on max settings: 114.6 F
After all of that, I let it cool back down to ambient temperatures, then plugged it in to charge and zipped it up inside my case, and after 30 minutes, the temperature was... 90.8 F.
So basically, it gets a couple of degrees warmer inside the case, but it's far from even being as warm as it would be when playing a low-powered game. Your Deck is not going to overheat if it's charging while it's asleep inside the case.
