Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Remote Play using the Deck like a Steam Link
So here's something that I've been thinking about, but as I don't have a Steam Deck myself I will be asking pretty nooby questions. Simply put, I would like to use a Steam Deck kinda like a Steam Link when I get home from work, the idea being is that I get 800p gaming portably whilst I'm out or at work, but then when I get home, I dock my Steam Deck, but use the hardware of my PC to get a more premium experience to the TV (4K) where the processing and output is from said PC.

The nooby question is, if the Stream Deck can be used for remote play, is it still 1080p@60hz like how it is on the Steam Link, or can the Steam Deck receive a higher resolution and frequency? I would like to get 4K@120hz if possible, but there's this nagging feeling in my head that tells me that it's not possible.

P.S. Sorry not to mention this, but the dock will use ethernet not Wifi. I highly doubt that even the Steam Link would work great with wifi.

The limiting factor would be the connection from the SD to the TV in this case, as the SD can drive a display up to 4K 60Hz from its USB-C to DP/HDMI, and the bandwidth in the display connection would be the limiting factor. A quick look at Steam's Remote Play options and advanced options, it seems to support up to 8K, but given the specs of the SD I am unsure if you could get that high (maybe up to 8K 30 Hz... maybe).

That's what I do with Death Stranding. It's a game that I generally play on my desktop (with a controller) at 2560×1600. If I just want to do some deliveries from bed, I just use Remote Play with the Deck (over WiFi), and it's fine. (I could install it locally on the Deck, but streaming gets me 60 fps with all the pretties, and the Deck isn't quite up to that for that game.) And when my controller ran out of battery during a normal desktop session, I could just pick up the Deck, connect to the already-running game, and keep playing using the Deck as a controller. As long as your PC can generate a 4K/120 video stream and your Deck has a 4K/120 output to your TV, you should be fine.
